Description

"This Little Bird" contains everything to love about the music of Allison Crowe. Adding titles of engineer and producer to her vocal, piano and guitar credits, Crowe is joined on most of the album's tracks by an ideal rhythm section ~ Dave Baird (bass) and Laurent Boucher (percussion). Nine new originals map emotional and spiritual territory with fresh sounds, encompassing: the elegiac "Phoenix"; the ramble tamble "Alive and Breathing"; gorgeous songs of love and hope, "Effortless" and "There Is"; the jaunty dark humor of "Skeletons and Spirits"; the redemptive grace of "Now"; the raucous celebration of the title track; a joy of simplicity in "Circular Reasoning"; and "Silence", a song that stirs with gypsy romance.

Acclaimed not only as an exciting songwriter and live performer, but, also, as a supreme song interpreter, for her freshly definitive takes, Allison Crowe delivers a trio of remarkable covers on "This Little Bird" - giving her singular voice to "A Case of You" (Joni Mitchell's knowing paen to heart and homeland), "Darling Be Home Soon" (John Sebastian's lovin' spoonful of longing) and "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)" (Ronnie Shannon's soulful song best-known as Aretha Franklin's break-out tune in 1967).

You will find those three songs and more on Allison's home site @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/ThisLittleBird.html

Enjoy! Peace.

This album deserves to become a Jamendo all time favorite. If you like folk music it must be in your collection.

Allison's rich voice is accompanied by soothing piano or acoustic guitar, bass and percussion. The lyrics have depth and the singing emotion.

The recording quality of the album is at the professional level.

This album reminds me of some of my favorite artists, Tori Amos and Eva Cassidy.

Well mixed, deep earthy sounds...

I was never a fan of Tori Amos. Sound is familiar, but much better. Tres bien..

Allison has a beautiful voice and a great style in her presentation. She is certainly an "undiscovered" talent.

She really sounds like Jewell in voice and style. I recommend this album to Jewell fans.

I would prefer her vocal style if it would include more between a whisper and a belt. Due to the emphasis on large dynamics, it is hard to see the contrast and nuances. It really seems to be overdone. Her lyrics are interesting, but they could use a better sense of rhythm, and flow better. Her topics, wording, and presentation seem to be somber and gloomy, rather like going to a funeral on a rainy day. Her production is fairly well done, incorporating a variety of instruments, and with good composition. But, I felt that sometimes more tuning needs to be done on balancing her voice and the instrumentation.

I'm not a Jewell fan, so I didn't like this album much. I liked the piano on the title track, and liked that track best overall. "Skeletons and Spirits" was a memorable track. There are many good pieces, they are just not packaged together in a way that suits my musical tastes.

Beautiful work. I love everything about it.

Ok, there are a few things better, but not a whole lot. Eating, drinking, and breathing are pretty tough to beat. This is my first review at Jamendo and I just have to say that this artist proves that great open music is entirely possible.

What really got me hooked to this album was the song "Skeletons and Spirits". I don't really know how to critique a song, so I'll just say that its wicked good :-). Next I started paying attention to the haunting song "Silence." That sent chills up my spine. Every time I listen to the album another song shines, this time around it is the first song, "Effortless." She deserves to win every major music award on the face of the planet. I like this artist, if you couldn't tell.

So then I jumped on over to her website and after sorting out a chronology for her albums, I found out that she excluded some songs from the album because they were covers, but you could download them from her site. Unfortunately they're mp3, but whatever. I haven't listened to all of them yet, because I was too busy listening to all the other content on her sight and also watching her Christmas special. She has good taste in art btw, John William Waterhouse is my favourite painter.

Moving right along, it took me a little while to get use to her vibrato. Its just something I never had heard in a professional artists, well, not to the extent she puts into her music. So if your thinking to yourself, "Man, that's way too much vibrato," just give it a little time, you'll learn to love it.

So, in summary, enjoy this album and be sure to drop by her website and check out all of her other stuff.
