Leo Lago always needed to create, to write, to draw, to compose. And it was this needing that made him, in 1997, along with his brother Leandro, to start the punk band Selvagens (what means Wild Ones). Both sang and were the band main songwriters, and Leandro played the bass. Along with Gustavo in the guitar and VJ in the drums, they had recorded their first work, Punkixe, in 1998. Sixteen songs, three covers (Ramones, Troggs, Trashmen), recorded live at the studio in three hours. The great influence was the punk rock of the Ramones, but there were some songs that tried new paths, as "Gato morto" (Dead Cat), "Rock 1/2 doido" (Crazy rock song) and "Nowhere to go" (a blues-punk that mix with samba/bossa-nova by the end).
In 2000, they recorded an EP, Lucas 12:49, this time with Lissandro in the guitar and Jorge in the drums. Four songs, three re-recordings from Punkixe and one Raul Seixas´ cover ("S.O.S.").
The EP receives a good review in the magazine Rock Press, but soon they disband. By this time, Leandro began to play guitar too and they began to record at home in the computer, programming the drums. They give up to look for new musicians for the band, but continue recording songs and trying new sounds more and more.
So, in 2006, Asilo Arkham para músicos insanos (Arkham Asylum for the musically insane), the new album, is almost ready, with 21 tracks, between songs and vignettes. It never was oficially released, but mp3s were put in the Internet. Punk continues here and there, in songs as "Ode à loucura" (Ode to crazyness) and in the do-it-yourself spirit; but they had new influences and increased the experiments, as in "Terezinha canta um blues" (Terezinha sings the blues), "Dozedê Didi", "A Corja" (The scum) and "Anunziô Zumbi", that received good reviews in sites as Overmundo and GarageBand..
The idea was to change the name of the band and put out Arkham Asylum as the first work as a duo, but, with the lack of time of Leandro, never was acomplished.
Then Leo Lago began to create songs alone, programming all the instruments. What started in a shy way gained force after the good commentaries received by the song "Blues de pai Joaquim" (Father Joaquin´s blues)", and later by "Vegetais" (Vegetals) and "Salve o cavaleiro" (Hail to the knight) at the site Overmundo, by the end of 2006. So, little by little, he creates the album central idea and other songs were made, giving birth to Venturas e desventuras do engenhoso Cavalleiro do Lago (Graces and disgraces of the ingenious Knight of the Lake), finally released in September, 2007, with 18 songs.
A necessidade de criar sempre acompanhou Léo Lago, forçando-o a escrever, a desenhar, a compor. E foi essa necessidade que, em 1997, fez com que surgisse a banda punk Selvagens, fundada juntamente com o irmão Leandro. Ambos cantavam e eram os principais compositores, e Leandro tocava baixo. Acompanhados de Gustavo na guitarra e VJ na bateria, gravaram seu primeiro trabalho, Punkixe, em 1998. Dezesseis músicas, sendo três covers (Ramones, Troggs, Trashmen), gravadas ao vivo no estúdio em três horas. A grande influência era o punk dos Ramones, mas já havia algumas músicas que fugiam disso, como "Gato morto", "Rock 1/2 doido", "Nowhere to go" (um blues-punk que terminava com "Na tonga da mironga do kabuletê"!).
Em 2000, depois de idas e vindas, sai um outro trabalho, Lucas 12:49, dessa vez com Lissandro na guitarra e Jorge na bateria. Quatro músicas, sendo três regravações de Punkixe mais a cover "S.O.S." de Raul Seixas.
O disco recebe uma crítica favorável na revista Rock Press, mas daí em diante a banda se desestabiliza. Na mesma época, Leandro passa a tocar também guitarra e começam a gravar em casa, direto no computador, programando a bateria. Com o tempo, desistem de procurar novos integrantes, mas continuam gravando músicas e aumentando cada vez mais o experimentalismo.
Assim, em 2006, Asilo Arkham para músicos insanos, o novo álbum, está praticamente pronto, com 21 faixas, entre músicas e vinhetas. Ele nunca foi "oficialmente" lançado, mas teve seus mp3s colocados na internet. O punk continua lá, em músicas como "Ode à loucura" e no espírito "faça você mesmo", mas as influências e os experimentos aumentaram bastante, como em "Terezinha canta um blues", "Dozedê Didi", "A corja" e no destaque "Anunziô Zumbi", que recebeu elogios em sites como Overmundo e GarageBand.
A idéia era trocar o nome da banda e lançar Asilo Arkham como o primeiro trabalho como uma dupla, mas, com a falta cada vez maior de tempo de Leandro, nunca foi levada adiante.
Assim, Léo Lago passou a criar músicas sozinho, programando todos os instrumentos. O que começou de forma tímida ganhou força depois dos bons comentários recebidos pela música "Blues de pai Joaquim", e mais tarde por "Vegetais" e "Salve o cavaleiro" no Overmundo, no final de 2006. Assim, aos poucos, foram surgindo a idéia central e as outras músicas do álbum Venturas e desventuras do engenhoso Cavalleiro do Lago, finalmente lançado em setembro de 2007, com 18 músicas.
