Aesthetic Evidence’s debut album, Words and Voices, makes use of conversations, phrases and other vocal fragments while incorporating an array of electronic, ambient, pop, jazzy, and progressive musical compositions. It’s all merely a background for the collage that Halsey Burgund, Aesthetic Evidence’s only member, creates with loops. Words and Voices’ style might seem very similar to that of the Books, but Burgund makes a point of sticking only to samples of the human voice and using them to create a true collage that connects seamlessly and deeply with the music. This collage of words against original music with a great beat, makes Words and Voices a genuine musical work of art by Aesthetic Evidence. It is music dedicated to something other than the band’s girlfriends and personal hardships; it is dedicated to this thing that humans often take for granted: speaking. Recently, Burgund worked on a project called “Bring Your Own Voice,” where people could enter a mobile plywood recording booth he built, and record their random ruminations. Eventually, the samples would be layered over Burgund’s musical compositions. On the project’s website, www.bringyourownvoice.com, Burgund explains his fascination with people’s voices by saying, “Your voice is unique. Your voice is a fingerprint of yourself. The way you intone words, the speed you speak, the inflections you use are all part of a unique aural fingerprint that identifies you as an individual.” (self-released) -Afsheen Leonardo Amiri for Northeast Performer Magazine

This album combines voices captured from a variety of "real-life" sources (including a plywood sound booth set up in public places) with traditional and electronic instruments to create layered songs that are appealing to the ear as music alone, but especially interesting if you also understand the words. While the sources of voice and the topics are as varied as a commentary on "Democracy in America" to the innaneness of job evaluations to the artist's reactions to his sister's marriage, all seem highly personal in one way or another. In a number of the songs, particularly "Predictable?" and "The Truth is Out" the artist portrays himself as a hopelessly "nice guy" trying to find his inner edge. While he's able to muster up an entertaining sense of irony, he charmingly falls short of convincing cynicism. The album has a nice balance between humor and seriousness, and between lighter and darker melodies. Those who appreciate experimental music and found sounds will enjoy this album, as it is a great example of both a "one-man band" and of a collaboration between the artist and the people around him who volunteered their voices for this project.

original and fresh, I found this album exciting to listen to. It's hard to imagine how this would play live (I'd be interested to find out!). The composition is clever however sometimes I think it tries to be too clever and looses it emotional appeal. In particular the phrases that are repeated over and over towards the end of some songs are not interesting enough for repetition. The refrains are cool, but the repeated samples are annoying. I really enjoyed My Sister's Getting Married until the "I don't have a sister to spare" bit. The words lack the gravity that the song seems to assume of them. Democracy in America rocks is wonderfully energetically discordant. This song is a microcosm for all the best qualities of this album, I suggest you give it a listen!

Démarche innovante ,experimentale par son combiné voix récupérées et fond sonore. Tout cela crée une ambiance étonnante, curieuse;on se prend à écouter attentiuvement les conversations telephoniques. Leaf est superbe A découvrir pour l'approche originale dans le domaine musicale Thanks
