I Got Skills part 1 (the single)

Tony Macaroni & Heavy Friends — featuring Robben Ford*

Tony Lufrano (aka ‘Tony Macaroni’) shows off his skills as songwriter, keyboard player and record producer on this debut single release. He gets a lot of help from his ‘Heavy Friends,’ including international guitar hero, Robben Ford, as well as San Francisco’s uncrowned king of retro cool, Mr. Glenn Walters on lead vocal. The end result is a swaggering 14-bar Blues that’s extremely laid back yet relentlessly driving, flavored with loving nods to R&B inspirations like Al Green, Ray Charles, Bobby Bland and Albert King.

Tony is a lifelong resident of Oakland, CA and a much-in-demand keyboard sideman for some of the Bay Area’s finest Rock, Blues and R&B artists.  He earned his bona fides backing up The Whispers on coast-to-coast Chittlin’ Circuit tours, highlighted by shows at Harlem’s Apollo Theater.  Tony’s studio work with the Whispers includes their Soul classic Christmas album and his featured piano, Rhodes™ and organ tracks on their recording of ‘A Song For Donny.’  The group later recorded and released Tony’s original song, ‘Can’t Stop Loving You Baby.’

Since then, Tony has gigged, toured and recorded with a cavalcade of stars, including Boz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis & The News, Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, Robben Ford, Taj Mahal, Tommy Castro, Bill Champlin, Steve Miller, Joe Satriani, Carla Thomas, James Cotton, Linda Tillery, Eddie Money, Harvey Mandel, John Handy, Zigaboo Modeliste, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Earl King, Ernie K-Doe, Otis Clay, ‘Chinna’ Smith, Syl Johnson, Richard Berry, Johnny Johnson, Booker T and more, as well as with members of Journey, Santana, Sly & The Family Stone, the Tubes, Jefferson Starship, Graham Central Station, Tower of Power and the Robert Cray Band.

Naturally, Tony plans to enlist the considerable talents of his ‘Heavy Friends’ on future recordings, (eventually a full CD of original songs.)  In addition to Robben Ford’s burning guitar work, ‘I Got Skills’ also features great performances by a lot of very talented singers and players who are definitely ‘Heavy Friends’ in their own right.

A great deep blues composition, with equally deeply inflicted vocals. The standard blues guitar produces a little magic from the Blues scales with some superb playing. The slow paced percussion along with a laid back(even lazy) bass produce the backbone for some basic Blues riffs. A piano hammers in the background to add a little flavor, but it's the guitar and brass along with excellent vocals that set the genre beautifully. No doubt that they got skill.

I hate when this happens. I hear something that I feel it's going to put me in ecstasy and just after I start having that good feeling... there's no more, it's over. Oh well, there's no remedy other than listening to this one track over and over again...I guess.
