This has a great vibe if you put it on in the background. The band plays well together. But the lead vocals are only average, and the lyrics are simplistic and disjointed.

If you like REM, you'll probably like Hype, who are a rockier/grungier REM.

I am surprised at the reviews that give Hype a low rating - I thought their music was pretty accessible to everyone.

It really hammers in the truth that tastes differ.

Some of the reviews complained about the cover. Hmph. Reading that kind of remark made me feel as if I'd done the browsing equivalent of accidently stepping in some dogshit. The cover hardly matters! It's the music that's important! Don't let yourself be brainwashed by image, especially if you're reviewing music!

Then, some of the reviews complained about the singer's voice. Pah! He's got a fine voice. Very REM Stipe-like in some ways. He hits all the right notes with confidence, he has the right feel injected in the song, and it just sounds good to my ears. He's no Elvis or Sinatra in timbre but his voice has its own character, dammit, and that's cool. Come on, think about it - Mick Jagger is a far worse singer, but that Wrinkly Old Pout-lipped Rolling Stone injects character in what he sings, so the music ends up rocking. (It helps of course that he's a smart businessman too, having paid a piddly amount of tax on squillions of dollars over the years, so he can concentrate on living the rock star lifestyle properly).

Hype's music had good hooks, the mix was good, and I bet they're dynamite live.
I downloaded their album (something I rarely do with Jamendo), but you guys in France, go on, check their home page, find out where their next concert is, go and see them, buy their album, do whatever you can to support them, 'cos they deserve it!

appendix:

The track "My Innocence" has grown on me after a few listens. Beautiful song. A great showcase of what they are about. Wish I could figure out the lyrics. I am upping their rating a bit because so many of the songs are so good.

It has a pretty distinct sound but it sort of sounds like Red Hot Chili Peppers during some parts and REM during others, most people probably won’t agree with me that’s why it’s important they listen for themselves. You’d be surprised a free album is this good.

All the songs are good but I primarily liked Home, My Innocence and Anybody here. All the songs have mellow and emotional (by this I don’t mean it’s emo, it’s not) signing. Followed by acoustic/electrical guitar, sometimes drums and various other instruments.

The cover is a little lame, especially because it looks like the “Lies and speeches” text was added with mspaint because it’s all pixilated.

Nice album. my innocence is awesome.

It's interesting, but a little quiet and bland. The tracks run together after a while. I like the lyrics, and the underlying melodies, but I'd enjoy the music more if the delivery were spiced up a little. I realize that this isn't supposed to be upbeat or anything like that, it's just that now the general sound and feel of the music doesn't change much through the track, or even from track to track.

That said, if you're looking for something new that is slightly sad, not too fast, and not too loud, this is a good pick for you.

My favourite track is Home. It brings me back to the era of alternative rock in the 90s. Awesome.

I think that at times it is difficult to stand back and look at what you have sone critically and then think that this is the face you want to put forward. As previous reviewers said, the band is nice and plays well together. In that sense, there is nice cohesion, the vocals are strong at times, they sound a lot like the connells, with lyrical phrasing like "LIVE" or "Blues Traveller"
I give this 7 out of ten for potential and seasoning.

Listen don't listen to the guys review before me. The vocals rock. It's not overpowering the music. What can I say. I'm listening to My Innocence its brilliant, the best song on the album. Best download here if you ask me...you'll be receiving a donation soon

English translation of the Description:

Begun in 2004, HYPE are four Parisian musicians whose taste for rock, melody, and pop is coupled with a potency lying somewhere between West Coast and the fog of London. Whichever the skyline, HYPE wishes to share its sound. "A perfect alchemy of electrical lyricism, furious pop, and entêtante." HYPE's musical roots are international. Thanks to their insistence on subtle songwriting, hooks, and singing, they will make you shiver …
