This is in fact the first metal CD that I listened to in my life. I have always thought that this genre of music is rather scary and nasty so this was a nice surprise. This is melodious and creates a nice mood. That's a pity I don't recognise the language in the lyrics. Is it French or one of the Celtic languages? I wish I could understand the texts. Anyway, why is the band called after the wolf from the Edda and not any of the creatures or characters from Celtic mythologies?
I personally am a fan of crossing metal and celtic concepts within a genre, so naturally I checked this out.
The instrumentation is absolutely fantastic. The only clear issue is mastering - the quality is poor, but I give you credit because you're talented, and this is your first release. I can barely hear the bass, and everything in the mix in general is very unbalanced.
The singer's voice is beautiful, but I can't understand your English... Don't you think you might fare better singing your native tongue? And I must agree with a past reviewer in stating that the female-fronted opera-like singing has been done to hell... but with a little work it would be fantastic regardless.
I do look forward to hearing more - I hope you're able to improve upon your sound as you get more experience.
Mix of celtic music and metal is something that I like very much, so it's not surprise that I likedthis album.
Fenrir's way of playing and singing is very nice. The band seems to have many new ideas about music and I think they enjoy just playing music together. Unfortunately, the quality of recording isn't as good as the quality of singing and playing. This is a main disadvantage of the album.
But all in all, I recommend "Whispers of the old world" and I'm looking forward to listening new Fenrir's albums.
The female vocals on Fianna remind me a little of Sonja Kristina of Curved Air.
I'd agree that the mastering and some elements of the recording could have been better. That happens, though, and usually only gets better as a band/artist continues. The composition and how well the parts are played and the vocal skill are all excellent though. The degree of interplay between the instruments and the way the themes develop would make me guess that this is a group that spends a lot of time writing and rehearsing, and I'd be that when performing live they can be amazing.
I hope we hear more of them.
this album is good - most of the flaws stated by the other commentors here are true... but don't let it keep you down i liked what i heard - only problem is that sometimes the metal interferes with the celtic and sometimes the celtic interferes with the metal you should find a way to weld it all toghther either way great music - i enjoyed it.
Do you know the feeling of having heard that before a thousand times? It's boring, it's repetitive, it's not creative at all...
Well, to be honest, I didn't really like this album. I'm cannot say that there was any song on this album I truely liked or that was still in my ear after listening to "Whispers Of The Old World".
Sometimes the music sounds - to me - pretty much the same, so only 5 from 10
A couple of people have mentioned that this album could do with a little more polish, but don't let that put you off. It's a nicely melodic piece of Celtic rock and a cracking first album.
I'm looking forward to seeing more from Fenrir
I love celtic metal, but few bands can really pull it off for me. Something about this band just rubs me the right way though. The female singer's voice is beautiful, though I do wish I could understand her better. I like the distortion on the guitar and the way the fiddle and guitar play back and forth with eachother.
What kept this album from really standing out is that it just doesn't feel completely polished. It's like something is missing though I can't put my finger on it.
