Album description

Little Light is the newest singer-songwriter collection from Allison Crowe. It opens with a rustically shimmering version of "Northern Lights" - a song Allison performed 'specially for the John Lennon Northern Lights Festival in Durness, Scotland. "Angels" is recorded live at St. Andrew's United Church, Christmas-time, in Allison's birthplace, Nanaimo, Canada. She's backed here by bassist Dave Baird and percussionist Laurent Boucher. "Disease", a song of social commentary, has, through years of live performance, become epic - channeling Beethoven, grunge and more. Here 't'is captured in its raging glory by Larry Anschell (on International Women's Day 2008, the same night celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Anschell's Turtle Recording Studios. Larry "Turtle" Anschell, Engineer and Producer, with Brad Graham Co-Engineer). Title track "Little Light" is among a set of guitar songs that reveal a different sort of Allison Crowe's writerly reflections in music. "Happy People", like such earlier songs as Ray Davies' Kinky "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", and Crowe's own, "Skeletons and Spirits", a bright melody coats more acid observations. Strong and gentle poetics of "Hold Back" warm us by a fire kindled in the '70s by Joni Mitchell. "Choose to Be" bridges the piano sound of Allison's "This Little Bird" songs with her new tunes. Bob Dylan's ramblin' shoes lead to a less restless farewell, as the album closes with "Wedding Song" - Crowe's sweetest, rootsiest, love song to date.

The interpretations on this collection are: "Time After Time" - originally a hit for that most unusual girl, Cyndi Lauper - Allison, a child of the '80s gives her impassioned take, live (Scott LittleJohn recording this, the same night as "Angels"); "Running for Home", is a cover of the Matthew Good Band, and one of the songs Allison has performed since her teens; and, by way of the Righteous Babe, Ani DiFranco, comes Allison's vocal-guitar nod to the great peace-loving bard, Phil Ochs - "When I'm Gone". "Can't be singing louder than the guns when I'm gone, so I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here."

You will find those cover songs and more on Allison's webpages @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/LittleLight.html

Enjoy! Peace.

Allison Crowe is currently right there at the top of the front page of Jamendo, creating a great first impression for all of us who are discovering the site at this time. And rightly so, for she is a talented songwriter, who blends the best of other artists and yet creates something uniquely her own from those guiding influences.

This is intelligent songwriting, with lyrics that at times seem to lay bare her soul with courage and sincerity. I like the fact that Allison has risen above genre and refuses to be boxed into any one style. It would be hard to tire of such a versatile artist.

While part of the appeal of Jamendo for me is the 'discovery' of exciting new sounds from fresh and inventive artists, it's nonetheless encouraging to find an established talent sharing her work on Jamendo.

I especially liked "Angels", good cheerful tune, the instruments using the whole spectrum; but the main focus is still with the vocals, leaving a well rounded, clean impression. The levels are perfect.

I have listened to this off and on all week. great lyrics, great voice, smooth and gripping sound and as addictive as crack. Every bit as beautiful as she is. No wonder she seems happy and says she feels blessed, she obviously is.

I love the way the vocals on this album slighly echo. I don't know way but it makes it sound slightly less groomed and perfected which makes it sound original and honest. I know thats not technical talk but who cares?
The piano on the 3rd song is AMAZING and totaly fits the mood of the lyrics. It's not got tonnes of layers so you can focus on just the piano and vocals. Almost like exposing the song I guess. It shows your not afraid to be listened to. I don't mean just normal listening to music, I mean you remember and can identify and imperfections or things you don't like. By letting people do that you show such faith in your music which I love.
I think this is my favortie album out of the two of your I have listened to. It's more edgy and harsh which I seem to love. Please don't stop composing because you truly are unique and a beautiful musician.

Seemingly simple arrangements but intriguing and interesting vocals/lyrics. Very nice. Thank you!
