There's something here I cannot put my finger on. Equals Contest seems to find itself at ease in the atmospheric passages between songs, or when the effort goes mostly in the structuring of a tight texture (Dirt Nap, Intransigent). I sense less satisfaction when the "progressive" vein goes a bit astray (Best.Winter.Ever), and even less when the band tries its hand at straightforward rock. Although I'm sure they've really got something to say, I suggest they review the general (and alas widespread) idea that you shall always find a midway between avantgarde and easy-listening if you want to gather an audience. That's unfortunately what perevents lots of emerging bands to fully express themselves.
This album is evidently a labour of love for the artists. This isn't always a good thing and to be honest I was expecting something overly earnest, or just self-indulgent.
I couldn't have been more wrong. Equals Conquest have produced a set of intricately layered, yet passionately performed, guitar driven songs, interspersed with some short, intriguing interludes. Dirt Nap is a powerful highlight. Synths are present, but used to good effect as on the eerie discordance of Intransigent5.
The album is technically accomplished, but it has a real soul - an unbeatable combination. I'd recommend listening from start to finish for maximum enjoyment.
In short - fantastic stuff and highly recommended.
This album has its definite strong moments of inspiration, occassionally surprising the listener with an inventively warped and almost atonal melody line which snakes and weaves around the place, bringing to mind in a way, early 90's alt rock trio FAILURE at times (a very good musical pointer, to these ears at least).
Yet Equals Conquest also seem to have a disturbing obsession with drowning their otherwise pleasant indie pop in swathes and swathes of ill fitting synths and awful fake string section arrangements, in order to make the songs sound more earnest and 'large-sounding'.
In the process, instead of embellishing the tunes they have here, the keyboards lay draped clumsilly across the top of the mix like an ugly layer of congealing aural fat, which is sadly impossible to ignore, as it is pumped so needlessly high in the mix at all times. This only serves to cheapen an otherwise consumately performed collection of pleasant little indie tunes. Shame.
Simply perfect. Best for relaxing, in work when others are stressed it makes island of peace.
Good music (I particularly like Dirt Nap) but not so high rating because of spamming (sorry guys... :-S)
J'aime particulierement 30th street.
Je n'ai même pas écouter les autres morceaux et je je mets un 10!
Nice album. I find it grows on you the more you listen to it.
Nice cover pic too. I think it is actually the wind farm beside the A4|E60 Autobahn, 12km west of Nickelsdorf, Austria, near the Hungarian border crossing at Hegyeshalom - where the A4 becomes the M1. I stopped to take a few snaps when My Hungarian girlfriend & I decided to drive an MX5 from Southampton, England to Budapest a couple of years ago.
