Crazy stuff :-)
Very challenging stuff, wonderfully averting any semblance of 'background music'. A very diverse collection - possibly too diverse? Difficult to judge as presumably a statement is being made here about variety. I'm going to have to look at each track really:
"Love Song" is well-titled, and actually appears to contain relatively little material and a lot of repetition. It stays interesting by virtue of rich sounds and sheer aggressive oddness - a great effect for the first listens, but one that diminishes with repeated listens.
"67 out of 72" sounds like a 20th-century experimental classical piece. The relatively 'primitive' programming bizarrely combines this with a video game feel. Hats off for coming up with this combination. The track achieves essentially the same sensory overload over its length, and while there are plenty of ideas I feel like they are all achieving the same thing. Still, it's given me something really new, and I appreciate that!
"Dirk The Turtle Boy" is the clear highlight for me. Disorientating stereo production, rich chewable sounds, lots of layers and plenty of ideas. This is a very deranged stream of consciousness and it holds up to repeated listens better than the others. I love the way both sudden transitions and more clear evolution are used. My favourite moment has to be from around 8:00-8:30. wtf?!
"That's The Way..." combines the best of the first two tracks, with a nice mix of 'sterilised' kind-of-contrapuntal classical with some mildly disturbing electronic beats. Kudos for making the barlines truly indetectable. There is a regular beat to this thing, but you aren't really meant to get it.
To summarise: This album is about giving the listener a really unique and mildly disturbing experience. It's not an emotional journey, you aren't supposed to feel good or relate to it. At the same time there is usually enough repetition to expend the depth of the tracks in a few listens. Listen to it a couple of times, let it change your life or not, then move on to something else. Well worth a go.
