Spleen's music meets its match. I have been searching for some time for the name of the vocalist; whoever she is, she is absolutely perfect for the music.
The other albums in Spleen's repertoire are full of sonic textures; almost he is an impressionist painter of sound. With the addition of the beautiful, ethereal vocals, the painting flashes off the canvas into glorious 3D.
As I understand it, the posting of this album was fraught with technical difficulties. Originally it was intended to be 12 tracks. The four that have made it will surely be at the top of my playlist.
Dar Williams wrote "Sometimes life gives us lessons sent in ridiculous packaging." One day, I had been recording for 10 hours straight. When I got tired, I flipped the wrong series of buttons on my digital recorder and accidentally erased a complicated conga drum track it'd taken me 3 hours to record correctly. I ended up erasing the entire song in frustration.
The next day, I recorded the track in something like 10 minutes, and it was hipper, groovier, and funkier.
We all fall down. The trick is to keep getting back up.
And with the music of Spleen, I am confident--when he gets up next time, it will be with even more power and grace.
