Album description

The album presents a four-part suite for chamber orchestra, piano, a few symphonic orchestral instruments, choir and perscussion. Its polyrhythmic musical language is both classically-shaped and modern and mostly addressed to lovers of chamber music. At the same time, all listeners may, hopefully, find it interesing as well.

Reviews on Insomnia

I wrote a review some time back and lost it in the posting process. The stars showed up, but nothing else.

That night I was inspired to share images of your music that came while listening.

It hasn't come back again, that 'whatever-it-is'... but I feel I need to respond anyhow.

The title worked well for me - the pieces are beautifully woven into the hours of a long night when one can't sleep and travel through the hours in reminiscences, partial dreams, hallowed moments of visionary light, tiredness, a slow waiting for the unconsciousness of sleep.

There was a syncopated element in the music that was more Jazz-like than your earlier album.

I like the rhythms in these pieces. They are poems of the night. Sonorous. Slow. Fast. Beating with rhythm through the endless dark hours. When it is quiet. When you can free yourself from the constraints of space and time and drift and dream. While awake. On the edge of sleep. That profound state, my favourite one.

Thank you for these pieces, their harmonies that sooth and yet entrain with the strange harmonies of our inner lives. Where we transmute our darknesses into subtle and steady and holy light.

Drifting through periods of insomnia, one can see the genesis of this album. Peace and tranquility versus needing to summon the endorphins in one's body to get to sleep. This album is both a calming landscape, and a description of insomnia which I think the composer may have gone through. An interesting melding of forces.

This, to me, appears a neo-classical concept work. As such it shares less with composers from baroque and romantic periods, and more with modern composers. Whilst I cannot completely identify an similar artist, there are similarities with the work of Philip Glass, as well as subtle hints of composers from Puccini through to and Johnny Greenwood.

The album resolves itself with the closing 'Part IV', which, with drumkit, has an orchestral-rock feel that sits quite comfortably, as if the insomnia has resolved. Parts I to III are far more subtle, shifting works, that would certainly not be out of place being played by chamber orchestra in concert.

A brave and creative work that deserves commending.

These pieces are really quite moving and yet at the same time very relaxing . . . and if you should have "Insomnia" you will find yourself resting and dreaming while listening to the instruments make their way through their appointed presentations. The strings and the keyboard . . asking questions of each other in the dark of the night, just beneath a low sky, flashing with lights and punctuated by darkness . . . and bells, as in "Part III" so quiet and restful . . .Deep questions . . . are asked in the un-slept nights, and that is the feeling projected by this music . .. highs and lows as the music wanders through our wakeful thoughts . . . puzzles in the quest through life, wakeful dreams in the dark of the night.

Insomnia... sleeplessness of the night, carries so much with it, the restlessness, the thoughts, that play on, in your mind, over and over again, the images of what's affecting you to sleep. Your minds, unrest and inpatients, to stop working.. Carries on even before you fall asleep. A bit like an awaken daydream. But you are wide away.. But the perfection solution, is this musical sound-scape.. Why, simply because it's filled with music and awe.. As you listen and feel the beauty develop and flow and evolve like the ebb and flows of the oceans across this big planet called the world, coming into land and leaving it yet again over and over.. You feel your emotions start to calm and relax with the serenity of this bewitching dream like state of Orchestral music. Affect you deep within and your brain and heart go into a meditative state of grace and enlightenment..It's like it explains and makes you understand why you are not sleeping and comforts and wraps its arms around you and makes you feel safe and secure and loved beyond words and the feels of sleep enter your mind and heart. and heavenly euphoric and contentment take you over inside and out..It touched me greatly.. And the power of words. are limited to me. And I can not express fully what I wish or want to say.. Bar.. magnificent..emotional, profound, dramatic, and one of the best albums this year I have checked out and truly felt the power of the music and the creativity of the composer and musician really touch me, deep within and out.. Thank you for the gift and power you hold within your hands and mind, regards to musical express and sharing it with the world. Bless you as I for one.. Do...
