From the 1960s onward, a lot of musicians from outside the country blues or Appalachian string band traditions have learned to play the songs flawlessly, but relatively few have learned to inhabit the music as convincingly as Johnny Hoodoo does in these tracks. I suppose a good part of that has to do with his willingnessness to inject his own personality and approach -- for the most part he doesn't treat the songs as museum pieces.
As with any review, of course, I don't want to go too far in essentializing my own taste: I happen to love minimalistic, trance-inducing, and "high lonesome" styles of folk and world music, and Johnny HooDoo definitely excels at that. But if you have any interest in American roots music, do give it a listen.
