Album description

Juan Shamán:  Reëvolución

First album by Juan Shamán, Jenaro A. Díaz-Ducca's dark Latin rock project, from San José, Costa Rica.

The 12 original songs show a mix of rock genres such as dark, new wave, and Latin rock, as well as Latin American rhythms such as bolero and son.  Some other influences are evident as well, classical music, electronica, etc.  The CD can be roughly divided into two parts: first, a "radio-friendly" part, and a darker, more intimist one.

Ranging from the Spanish Romancero to post-Modernism, literary influences also mingle in a fabric of different discourses and readings, aesthetic, social, even political.  From an urban perspective, the lyrics span current romantic and social issues.  The poetry, however, is rich in images, metaphors, and paradoxes.  It also offers a deep concern for the future.  According to Juan Shamán, "this album is a love album; love for your beloved one, love for mankind, and love for those that have not been born yet..."

An album of strangely seductive melodies - sweet sonorities with an epic and poignant, or at times even violent touch, an element of originality and some unexpected "turns of phrase".

The voice is appealing in a way of its own (it brings to mind the singer of Pearl Jam), although sometimes (very) slightly, and perhaps even deliberately off pitch - which also adds to the dark, unsettling feeling...

One of the sincerest and most touching albums I had the chance to encounter on Jamendo.
