Album description

Dynamics of Darkness (2007) by brokenkites.

"Did you know that something on the order of every seven years the average human replaces ninety eight percent of their molecules with new molecules? That's like every handful of years, you're ninety eight percent different than you were before, yet you hardly notice a real change at all. I guess you kind of realize that you're growing older, and your relationships change, but you feel like you're the same person, for the most part."

"Really? Ninety eight percent?" I asked, wondering if she was right.

"Look it up!" she replied. "Anyway, that's not the point I'm making, it's just an idea, an example. The point I am trying to make to you is that you never notice a change, but a change has been made, gradually. And maybe that's what happens when you die, you just sort of make a smooth transition to the next level, a level that's probably only about one or two percent of the way things are as we know it."

"That's a good point, but I think you're reaching for something that isn't really there."

"Maybe, but it makes sense to me." She crossed her arms on top of the covers. "I mean, you don't have to have god for that, do you?"

Most of the tracks on this album are deep, harmonious pads. It is put together very well. When beat patterns are put into it the tracks are much more interesting. I know that not having beats at the beginning of songs like this is preferred, but sometimes I think the pads with no beat drags on a little too long. All in all, a solid album to listen to if you are in a relaxed mood.

From the Darkness flows beautifully and speaks volumes. Is this where god comes from, the dark unknown? In my humble estimation god is the personification of natural phenomena, which we create in our anthropomorphic manner, for some in the historical evolution of natural philosophy. However, I believe that something else is accountable for this exposition of reverence and, that is, the simple but imperative drive to survive (avoiding Darwinian logistics). It is representative of our unaccountable molecular motivation to continue existence on a very fundamental level, amplified by the fact that we are a colony of interconnected molecules forming an apparently greater whole, i.e. the human being.

Circadia continues the flow and then introduces some structure about halfway through the track, to good effect. It fits in well and allows the melodic strain to diversify a little more. Nicely done. Then to that subtle art of creating aesthetically pleasing objects from a simple two dimensional piece of paper. Origami, again the flow predominating, lends itself to the level of concentration needed to achieve the end result. The intonation is lovely and works well with the broad strokes of sound that create the background, setting the piece in its place within the environment in which it is created.

Somewhat more formal, and necessarily more structured, in Technique. Well thought out and executed, with a nice balance and progression. I like the dynamic of the synthesized sound that weaves its way from speaker to speaker. The Fifth Demon starts gently and gradually builds into a thoughtful astral animal. Lovely musical construction. There is a nice boldness to Euthenica, quite strong and assertive. Hearts is another strong testimony to natural sounds being integrated well into musical expression. A rainstorm can mean so many different things to so many different people. A nuisance to some, absolutely vital to others, some a simple enjoyment in the form of reverence for nature.

Beta Eight has a beat and bass that leads the repeating melody of the piano, which begins to alternate as the sweeping synth sounds hold it all together. Then the beat goes and leaves the rest to settle down to ground zero with elegance. I am inclined to think of rain again listening to Scene One. Musical droplets of dynamic musical creativity, sustaining the life of the listener in this cultural milieu (I don't think a lot has really changed over two years since its conception). Syn Three presents the listener with more of the flowing synthetic sound, verging on an almost orchestral structure. Quite a nice listen, with some percussive activity to delineate the rolling gait.

Lunaspiel is a very enjoyable, light bite, which is quite uplifting. Has a nice sense of energy. I have already mentioned reverence and its transposition into 'god', and there appears to be something spiritual, or at least holy, in Heiligenschein. Again the energy is maintained, and as with the other tracks, monitored perhaps in terms of excess. Generally quite a calm album, with some decent areas of thoughtfulness. Love the way the track peters out to an end. More deft artfulness with Shadow Folding, not even any tangible media to hand for this short track. The Faustian legend is touched on well with Mephistopheles. Well focused and suitable as a backdrop.

As far as the transmigration of the soul, I think there could be an element of vouchsafing our passage into natures finest evolutionary trait, that of death. In some religions we rely on a 'golden' existence in a further level of existence which is permanent, or sometimes transitory at best, though usually with an eye to coming to a rest at some point. However, metempsychosis gives us the opportunity to belief that we can, in one form or another, last forever. That could be a good thing, though I think it relies on the accountability of the spirits conscience. Nice track that works very well. Finally, we are left with Into The Light, which again suggests a spirituality that is well used to soothe the pain of living. However, I don't agree that ALL souls should be shown that way. If transmigration is valid, that suggests that the spirit has a role to play greater than our awareness of ultimate responsibility to our existence(s). Listen and get thoughtful. What contract have you signed?

This was my first Brokenkites album that I bought from the artist. I have really enjoyed it and it always puts me in a better, more thoughtful mood when I listen to it.
