This album is the culmination of my reggae influences I suppose. While it's not strictly a reggae album (or even close really) it is clearly structured around dub, ska, rocksteady etc. Over the winter I was listening to alot of Scientist, King Tubby, Lord Creator, Larry Marshall, and Augustus Pablo. Those old vinyl records with that jazzy, dancy sort of reggae are really cool, I love when I hear the fuzz and clicks in old dub remixes and t made me want to experiment more reggae music. Since I am not a reggae musician the result was.... This.
I was also listening to alot of Wire, PiL, This Heat, Pop Group, The Raincoats, and The Fall to balance things out so the result is sort of an even rock/reggae album. The tracks are long, typical of my songs, with very loud basslines (typical again) and the melody being carried on my melodica. I actually had to redo 3/5 of the songs during the creation because I didn't notice until after I had mixed them that the drums didn't go with the other song on the album which was supposed to set the mood for the entire piece.
The title was influenced by a company a couple hours away called Oklahoma Gates, I thought that the name was interesting since usually behind a gate there is something of importance but really, what is so great about Oklahoma?
Stephan Edwards: Drums (Bread), Guitar (Bread)
