This album got a lot of publicity and soared straight to the top of the Jamendo rankings. I think it's awesome how popular artists are discovering free culture, but I hope that those who have been here longer (and perhaps have more to offer) will be discovered soon.
The music is great, and production quality is superb (as expected), but it's not really anything I would have been raving about had it not had DJ Spooky's name on it. The first track, Moon Rain, is great electro jazz funk, and the second track, Scratch Battle, as you can imagine, is fast paced turntable warfare. I suggest listening to the track in order, as if I were to number my favorites, the best would be first, and just decrease from there.
I say thanks hesitantly, as I do not wish to imply that making this album was a purely generous act in terms of payback. Perhaps the motivation behind releasing the album was selfless, but DJ Spooky is going to benefit from this greatly in terms of popularity with not only the olpc, but the other derivative works that will come out of this as well. Hopefully Mr. Miller will discover the benefits of such a free license and release future work similarly, and hopefully others will likewise see the benefits and follow.
I don't get the hype about this. To me it is nothing but "drum noise" without any catchy rhythm nor melodies. Boring.
The first song Moon Rain is very similar to the incidental music on the online Nintendo DS card game "Rummy"
it's way too weak, what kind of contribution is that?..
I really like this release. I downloaded this some time ago and it was using a BY-SA 2.0 Fr license. But why did it change? is it true that if I have the old file I can still use that license instead of this one?
Great energy, keep it comming!!
If it wasn't enough that this is for olpc
it is also fantasic work . i love it
I love it so much i've made track 1 in to my ring tone on my phone :0)
This is a great EP! I especially love the eloquent, jazzy sounds of "Moon Rain". This is a very admirable contribution.
Now that’s something! The DJ Spooky himself is uploading jamendo! At first I thought that someone simply didn’t know thaat the nickname Has been already taken and started to produce things under it. But, no – instead we get a great surprise. Ok. Let’s get down to the tunes:
- Moon rain – great jazzy-funk. Very much modern and very much classy.
- Scratch battle - tutrntablism at its best. Sometimes, with that kind of music, when the break it’s too long it maybe be boring, but that one is not!
- One laptop – Good leitmotif for the whole campaign. Sounds like an upgraded Expo2000 theme ;-)
- One laptop drum solo – Little bonus for smaple-seekers ;-)
What can I say? It’s the top shelf of the top-shelf. An excellent single, that could easily hit the underground charts, but it’s served to us for free.
