Friend Owl was born out of the ashes of my former band, Puppy Mill. Originally consisting of Andy Poteat on guitar, Banjii (me) on bass, Stephan Edwards on drums, the band went through a musical evolution in May 2008 shortly after the recording of Emergency Biscuit (Step 2 of 2) where Andy and and Stephan both quit.
After this happened I refocussed my sound to reflect my tastes solely and not the tastes of the group. The result is significantly less fuzz, no metal influences at all, and no more short songs. Instead, song lengths increased dramatically to make room for improvised guitar and keyboard parts, an increase in bass, a more pronounced pop and classic rock element, and different subject matter.
Friend Owl now continues with me as the sole member, though I welcome collaborative projects and occasionally have friends contribute. It is no longer a live element but instead operates solely as an internet based band. I don't stick to a single type of music so recordings vary. My biggest influences are Moondog, The Raincoats, Velvet Underground, This Heat, and Silkworm.
