JanLik is a self-taught bass player, was born in Guadeloupe, (JanLik = Jean-Luc, in Creole).
I learned my first scales from my second older brother who is a multi talented artist.
I grew up listening to Caribbean music like Calypso, Socca, Ska, Reggae. I was an early Bob Marley fan in the 70s! I was also influenced by Soul Music from the US.
My musical curiousity led me to listen and have an eclectic appetite for Pink Floyd, Genesis, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarck, The Police, Jean-Luc Ponty, as well as Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and U2!
To me the best music is the one that makes your soul vibrate in harmony.
My first band experience was with my brother and a few friends in Guadeloupe. Our music was way too innovative to find any support. So, we folded. I continued playing with occasional bands (for weddings). I studied Gwo Ka (ancestral black music from Guadeloupe) for a while. But I wanted something bigger and more universal.
I met with a guitarist from Martinique who liked Rock and Reggae. We decided to start a a band the following summer in Martinique. We praticed on the beach near north Fort de France.
We went on stage to play some songs from Bob Marley (especially Rastaman Vibration!) and a few of our own songs. End of summer and the band folded.
At that time, I was going through a big spiritual crisis. I had been an atheist, then I became a hinduist, then I adhered to rastafarianism (thanks to Bob Marley!). Hinduism and Rastafarianism were supposed to lead me to eternity. But, as I probed these beliefs, it all came down to major discrepencies in their finalities and the impossibility to find true meaning to my life, there.
I spiralled down into despair. I left school and decided to commit suicide to escape the void I was experiencing. At the very moment I was about to act on my "baleful scheme", I came across a Bible. I started reading it frantically and I asked the God of that book to speak to me, if he ever was.
I came across two texts that really spoke to me:
a) 1 Timothy 6: 15-16 : "...the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen."
b) Revelation 2:4-5: " I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. 5Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place."
Amazingly enough, these texts enlighted my soul and led me to repentence before God. My burden were lifted and God's forgiveness breathed life into my heart chasing away any desire for suicide.
In this quest for the meaning of life, while I had the feeling I was at the end of my road, Jesus Christ was there waiting for me.
I gave up playing music for a while, in order to deepen my faith in Christ. I went to Moody Bible Institute in Chicago for a Pastoral Training Degree. There, I met a few talented musicians who pulled me back on stage. I bought Rickenbacker Bass guitar with Roland Bass amp and started playing some Smooth Jazz, and various Christian Contemporary Music styles. We were revolutionizing Moody BI's image with a few concerts at the Plaza!
After leaving Moody, I returned to my homeland where I met Liliane. I sold my instruments to get some cash to marry her!....
We left Guadeloupe to get back to Chicago for six months, then we decided to go to Paris.
We found a studio in Colombes and met some good friends from a Baptist Church who wanted to start a band. A few months later, Ed Pawlowski, my former drummer at Moody, sent me a superb Fender Precision bass guitar for my birthday.
So, we startes a band called Degré5* where we played some Reggae, Smooth jazz, Latin music and Rock and Roll with a Christian attitude. We went on stage a few times, in many churches and went as far as studio recording. Unfortunately, we were not able to produce any album from that, and our professional responsibilities broke us apart. Thus ended Degré5*.
Since then, I have decided to write and execute my songs solo, using my iMac and my personnal instruments as I still have some inspiration and the desire to share my songs with you (who are reading this now)...
As I believe music is a gift, I want to pass it on to you.
Whoever you are, I want to thank you for listening to my songs.
I am sincerely honoured you have taken on your precious time to read all this about JanLik.
May your soul be uplifted and blessed as you leave this place.
My love to you ! ( Lanmou pou zôt’ ! Beaucoup d’amour à tous !)
