The Mystery Artist initially emerged in late 2005 in Luxembourg as an undefined and in constant evolution concept of Miguel Lopo. It started as simple experiments, triggered by the curiosity to know how some songs, written over the years, would sound past the acoustic guitar-voice format.
Still in Luxembourg, three more members join the Project (Joaquim “Joka” Monteiro – guitar; Orlando Macedo – Bass; Artur Ribeiro – Drums), given rise to the initial formation of The Mystery Artist. In June 2006 this formation gave its first and only live performance at the “Express Yourself Weekend VI” in Roullingen–Luxemburg where the present crowd received with enthusiasm.
The listening of these initial recordings by long-time friend Marco Azevedo leads to the invitation of some gigs in Portugal during the summer of 2006 which is gladly accept by the band. However, due to professional and personal commitments, the original members of the band have to cancel their participation in the summer “minitour”. Instead of cancelling the “minitour” altogether, Marco suggests replacing the original members of The Mystery Artist by musicians which had previously worked with him in a project that no longer existed, giving rise to a new formation of The Mystery Artist: Miguel Lopo – Guitar, Keyboard, Harmonica and Voice; Marco Azevedo – Guitars; Samuel Azevedo – Bass and Pedro Pinto – Drums.
The collaboration between the new members was excellent, intense and productive. After just a week of rehearsals the band went on the road. Of the summer 2006 “minitour” two shows stand out: one in Mirandela at “Belha Bar” and the other one in Carrazeda de Ansiães at the “Dia da Juventude” (Youth Day) celebrations. By the end of the summer the band gave an interview and a small acoustic showcase for the EP show of the radio station: “Radio Globo Azul” in Espinho.
In October 2006 the band records its first EP at “Quarta Vaga Produções” studio in Vila Nova de Gaia, containing eight original songs plus one cover: A Forest by The Cure.
From then on the band as played on several locations: Blá-Blá (Porto), Tendinha dos Clérigos (Porto), Fábrica de Som (Porto) Lounge (Lisbon) Belha Bar (Mirandela), Improviso Bar (Espinho), among others. Thanks to the web and myspace, the band had the chance to be broadcasted in national as well as international radio stations such as Radio ARA in Luxembourg.
Recently, in April 2008, Pedro Pinto leaves the band and is replaced by new drummer Ricardo Vasques. Since then the band is working on new material as well as strengthening old songs.
The expression of its music carries several states of mind, both calm and melancholic in luscious ballads; or aggressive and loud in an abrasive new-age rock reminiscent of other times.
The band’s influences are broad and diverse due to the eclectic individuality of its members. Their sound can be described as an alternative rock/pop and although most of the songs are original compositions, there is also space for covers of bands such as: The Cure, U2, Placebo, Pearl Jam, The White Stripes, among others.
