The songs are filled with constant dull roar of sound with little depth. Break away from the wall of sound a bit. Throw in some surprises. Flip the shit and then flip it back. Do something to hook me in! After listening, I got a sense that nothing was gained nothing was lost.
It sounds like the band is trying to do an imitation of coldplay doing an imitation of U2. The musical soul feels like its been watered down to the point to where there is no edge left (Get it? It's a pun)
Excuse my passive aggressiveness: Your playing is solid, the production shines, but I've heard your songs in an non-condensed soup form.
This album feeds my curiosity. I want to step closer and understand why strange flashes of light and eerie noises are coming from the house across the way, yet I'm content making up my own theories and observing from a safe distance.
You get points if you got the reference. :D
The music is repetitive and perhaps on the verge of being minimalistic. Usually these qualities would cause me to rank the music lower, but they work towards the albums advantage. The music is more about expression of emotion and the story at hand then direct active engagement. At least that's how I approach this work. I think it would be interesting to have this music set to film. The music tells the story well and would be a perfect compliment to a moving picture.
Truculent continues to do what they do best by sending the listener on a wild ride into the uncharted territories of the musical rain forest. The music is hard to digest and unsettling, but that is ultimately the greatest charm. The listener can be rest assured that there will be something interesting coming up.
Wild spastic guitar playing is punctuated by the clear melodies of the clarinet. The drums and bass never miss a beat.
The last track was a little surprising given the general direction of the album. It was a very tight funk piece and a vocal track. None the less, extremely well executed and in my opinion a cool change from the rest of the content. The clarinet was processed with loads of effects providing a sound which I don't think I've ever heard before.
Get this album!
Fresh Body Shop has channeled the soul of Trent Reznor. The result sounds great and I enjoy the efforts, but I think it would be sad if you guys pidgin-holed yourselves as a poor man's Nine Inch Nails. For future releases maybe try to channel your own soul or if you don't believe in originality, at least draw on a more diverse set of influences. Thanks for the great album.
I've been putting this album on every time I do crunches. Don't get the wrong idea. I don't use it exclusively for exercise.
It sounds like a pretty standard techno album, but it has demented sounding overtones. I mean that in a good way. Demented is good. It's repetitive and mechanical, but it doesn't seem to get in the way.
A couple of years ago I probably would have written this off as nothing special, but it really struck a chord with me when I listened to it. Keep making music!
I thought I was going to love this album. In the first track the drum programming was tight. The synth hit all the right notes. It gave me goosebumps even.
But the lead guitars ruined it for me. The guitar sounded more like aimless noodling merely filling up space. Such tracks as "Arktis" and "Mantra", which were otherwise very interesting, suffered because of this. I think the same could be said for the synth solo in "Droids Talk". The guitar actually seemed to work in this piece.
Don't get me wrong. When it comes to the basis of many of these songs, I think the work is brilliant. Many songs have a cool 90's King Crimson like vibe going for them.
I think it would do these songs well to let them breathe a bit. Open space doesn't always need to be filled. Put soul into a few notes rather than trying to pull of the uber-solo. I think the result would be more rewarding to the listener.
Eisfeld sounded was a nice track which just was in need of another take. The execution was not all there. I didn't care much for the vocal track.
The music is close to being amazing, yet so far away. There are only a few elements ultimately holding the music back. I look forward to seeing what you will produce in the future. Thanks for sharing!
I was intrigued by the "jazzpunk" tag on the album. Great album! It is a very fresh and new sound. I'm quite sure I would have called it jazz punk myself. The classification doesn't seem to quite do the music justice. The jazz influence is quite clear. The music is played with a "punk attitude", but I feel it doesn't borrow too much from the genre musically speaking. One can hear a variety of influences including early progressive rock, Klezmer music, jazz, jam rock, reggae, fusion etc.
The point here is that Truculent did a wonderful job of putting together a plethora of music styles which at first may seem to contradict each other. The clarinet in this style of music is very fresh. These days its not very often one hears it outside of Orchestras and Dixieland bands.
I hope you guys put out a new album soon. What you've done so far is wonderful and I hope that you continue to push the envelope and create more great music.
