Voice can be listed as an instrument, but throatsinging, yodeling, death growl etc. are just various implementations of the same thing, therefore they should not be listed. Following your logic we should list flanger, tremolo and wawa for guitar as a separate instrument.

    No he's not!

    Watch this.

Phon is right, farts are widely used in music, though they can't be listed as an instrument. Probably he should've suggested an arse as an instrument :D

i'm well aware of the usage of farts, burps, and even the occasional orgasm used in music, (see: mike patton), but i think it's important to have some fucking standards when putting a list of instruments together. i mean, we could call everything a fucking instrument if we sat down and thought about it. just because merzbow or einsteurzende neubauten might have made music by banging away on sheet metal or anvils doesn't mean i think they should be included on the list. there is even a vegetable orchestra out there (see:http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=hpfYt7vRHuY) but does that mean carrots, mushrooms, or broccoli belong on the list. hell no. just because you can use something AS an instrument does not make it an instrument.

Face it. This list is going to be constantly growing, as the number of instruments is grows whenever a new one gets invented.

I see that the waterphone, invented by Richard Waters, is on the list at oddmusic.com. It really isn't such an odd instrument, because practically everyone has heard it at one time or another. It has been a favorite for adding spooky or spacey sounds to Hollywood movie soundtracks for at least 40 years.

I can think of a long list of instruments that don't appear on the list, many of them invented from the 1920s - 1980s by American composers Harry Partch and Ivor Darreg and others. The difficulty of making a comprehensive list of instruments should be obvious already, but if it isn't, here's an excerpt from http://musicmavericks.publicradio.org/features/feature_partch.html (this is a fun web site by the way. They have "virtual" versions of Partch's instruments.)

By 1969, the year he recorded "Delusion of the Fury," Harry Partch had designed 27 new instruments, all to be played on stage at the same time in a spatial ritual theater.

So a few new instruments that should be added are:

  4. Quadrangularus Reversum
    The Boo
    Eucal Blossom
    Gourd Tree with Cone Gongs
    Spoils of War
    Zymo-Xyl

  5. all by Partch, and a few by Darreg:

  6. Megalyra
    Elastic tuning organ
    Electric keyboard oboe
    Hob Nail Newel Post

  7. and by Jonathan Glasier

  8. Godzilla
    The Wing

  9. and don't forget the Hosaphone by David Roth, the Hosasoon by Johny Reinhard

But the absurdity of keeping this list up to date isn't painfully clear by now, the list is missing some very common instruments as well. Practically every child in the US learns basic music on a cheap plastic recorder, an instrument that has been around for at least 500 years, the tin whistle, very common in Celtic music, euphonium, a common band instrument, etc.

    Sheesh! Am I ranting yet?

In general, this article might be very handy for adding many instruments:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musical_instruments_by_Hornbostel-Sachs_number
I think that pretty much takes care of the job for you...
    _____________

A few I thought of (which are probably listed in the article above, but I include here anyway just 'cause I can):
Balalaika -- I'm surprised this wasn't on there. A traditional Russian folk instrument. I don't play it myself, but it's one of my favorite instruments.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balalaika

Bandura -- A Ukrainian folk instrument

Theremin -- I think somebody suggested this, only misspelled.

    Hi there,

Just performed an update on the instruments database as well as software (see other thread)

Added all your suggestions that had a wikipedia page (feel free to create pages that don't exist yet) :
    - Washboard
    - Singer => Voice
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charango
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dholak
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarangi
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazoo
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphonium
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin_whistle
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balalaika
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alboka
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lap_steel_guitar

I remind also that the goal is not to add every single instrument that ever existed earth but to create an "almost" complete list of instruments people on Jamendo may play.

So that's it for today's update, keep suggesting ! :)

    cheers
