WAS FÜR EIN ALBUM! höre ich jetzt zum vierten mal durch und ich muss sagen mit jedem weiteren durchlauf wird das album besser, man entdeckt immer wieder neue feinheiten. die ganze härte wird dezent und akzentuiert eingesetzt, zwischen vertrackten momenten mit geschmeidigen melodielinien, die schleichend in ein metallastigen prog.-rock münden. mal wird eine spharische dichte erzeugt, dann wieder psychedlischen gitarren-sound. diese mischung aus progressiv-rock, sparischen klängen, metal und melodien machen das album zu einem meisterwerk. anspiel-tipp: track 4 - between being and ego track 7 - mercenartrack track 10 - stopping the world anhang: ich hoffe das das album schnell freigegeben wird zum download. z.zt. kann man das meisterwerk nur über den jamendo-player anhören, jedoch nicht runterladen.

...herrliche Melodien und Gesangslinien quasi aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt. Ob nun die Melodien, die Harmonien, das Zusammenspiel der Band, es passt einfach alles zusammen. Sphärischen Keyboard- und Gitarrenklängen verleiten geradezu darin zu versinken. Bevor man aber restlos abgetaucht ist holen eine harte, metallische Gitrarrenriffs wieder an die Oberfläche zurück. An viele Stellen tauchten vor meinem geistigen Auge Bilder auf, wie man sie aus Filmen wie Blade Runner kennt. Auch wenn Progressive-Rock-Puristen eventuell einen starken Pop-Anteil in dieser Veröffentlichung bemängeln könnten ist dieses Album weit entfernt vom Mainstream. Fazit: Dieses Werk bietet einfach saugeile Musik. Und wer Lust hat, nicht die x-te Kopie von irgendwas schon dagewesenem zu hören, der sollte sich dieses Meisterwerk auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen.

.....by musicians who are playing well known genres, but trying to find new paths to walk on. And "Of the I" have done damned good here. This is quite a unique, outstanding and brillant rockstyle. Simply a diversified, eclectic, innovative, professionally produced rock album. Thumbs up U.L.I.

Besides i am this, Of The I was the other band I've discovered when I first started going to this website that stuck with me through the years. They're actually quite good, and a full review of their music is something I always wanted to do ever since I wrote a mini-review of their sampler for this album 2 years ago. Back then I stated that this band is just getting better and better. After the 2 year absence and comeback to jamendo with their debut album for free I can say that that's still an understatement. The first thing to realize is that if you haven't downloaded anything from them yet, just download this album, all of their songs from Demo-noid EP and the 3 piece sampler of this album is on this album, but remastered and in official "album version"... ... so in other words it's a remastered version of all of their songs put into one place. But wait there's more! There are 3 new tracks on this album (Instars, Ascend, and Modern Equivalent) Each of them having the same progressive style as the songs that precede them. On a final note, this album is a crown achievement of a band that might or might not become as big as bands like Porcupine Tree who share very similar stylings, but they deserve every bit of the fame they get. If you're a Progressive rock fan, Check them out. If you're a regular rock fan, Check them out, Hell if you're just looking for something different, Check them out! I said in my review of the sampler that they're going to be big someday. This album perfectly shows how they could be if more people knew about them.

Parfois, on découvre des albums et des groupes – comme ce "Balance Instars" des Anglais de Of The I – dont on se dit « hmm, c’est pas mal, je me demande ce que valent leurs albums plus récents ». Et là, on découvre qu’il n’y en a pas. C’est un peu déprimant, même si ce n’est pas surprenant. Of The I, donc. Groupe londonien à la musique inspirée par le rock et le métal progressif, mais également la musique électronique, l’ambiante et le rock alternatif. "Balance Instars", datant de 2008, est leur seul vrai album (il existe également un EP antérieur, Demo-noid, qui inclut quatre des morceaux de Balance Instars). On pense immanquablement à Porcupine Tree, mais également à Naïve. Un des points très positifs de Of The I, c’est qu’ils ont un son bien à eux, moderne, et des morceaux qui tabassent bien (« Cathexis », « Cold » ou le superbe « Ascend »), ainsi quelques bizarreries comme le très trip-hop « Instars » ou le toolien « Mercenary ». On sent le groupe qui a fait ses devoirs, mais qui n’a pas pompé sur ses petits camarades. Enfin, peut-être un peu quand même, mais pas de façon outrancière. Ce n’est pas un album parfait. Il comporte quelques longueurs et quelques morceaux qui m’agacent un peu, genre « Modern Equipment », qui tourne en boucle sur un thème pénible; de plus, la grande variété d’influences n’est pas toujours très bien intégrée et tend à donner une impression générale d’hétérogénéité. Musicalement, les musiciens se débrouillent bien, sans réel point fort. J’ai découvert cet album au hasard de mes pérégrinations sur Jamendo, la plateforme musicale en ligne au format Creative Commons (dans le cadre de mon mois de mars gris foncé) et, des quatre ou cinq groupes que j’ai écouté lors de ma visite, c’est celui qui m’a réellement impressionné. En plus, c’est un groupe qui a l’intelligence de proposer "Balance Instars" en téléchargement libre, tout en vendant une version légèrement étendue sur iTunes, ce que je trouve assez malin. Hélas, dans son cas, ça n’a visiblement pas suffi et Of The I est sans doute allé rejoindre le purgatoire des groupes disparus. This, is an album with a peculiar capability of keeping my interest from one extreme to the other. Very rich musically and sonically substantial, doesn't comply specifically with one or two particular genres, instead, seems to agglomerate quite a few, while effectively, also being capable of showing a strong personality and identity. Rock, is perhaps the starting point, or its general pavement, but, all along the sinuous way, there are a lot of different incidences and incursions, which make of the album an authentic pleasure to explorer and discover. Despite my inadequacy to describe it, in terms of an easy comprehension, I strongly recommend it to all those who enjoy alternative rock music with some resourcefulness, somehow similar to the progressive structures. Definitely essential and an opportunity not to loose.
