Sometimes, the things which we want and we long for seem so close that we just have to reach for them. It's this moment, where all things appear to be possible. However, the very time we put forth our hand, these things are further away than we thought, out of reach from the very beginning, every now and then, they werent even there and we only saw what we wanted to see, and sometimes they even turn around and go. Nevertheless, we do go on, every day, step by step.

All the songs have a history. Some of them are more personal than others. Some are explainable, some are not. Usually, I played these pieces after parties, after some particularly good or bad things happened. Here are some scenes that I like to share with you.

1- Next to you

Even though the title suggests a love song, it is none. Its a longing-song. For something, that is far away. This song is one of the first things I ever recorded. I was 19 that time and I wished I could again think so clearly when I play today. The melodies were so plain in front of me.

2 - Durch die Menge.

I was at a party. It was the certain party where I met this person. I stalked, I surrounded the whole evening and I tried to get in touch, but I was completely ignored, this bastard. :-) Finally, through a common friend, we got i touch. We talked, laughed and decided to meet again in the next days. After coming home, I sat on the piano and played that piece. This piece is what I felt when I first saw him, through the crowd of talking of dancing people, he stood there, 20 meters away, with 2 cocktails in his hands, looking around.....

6 - Because of

I dont know If u know that feeling when all things seem to be clear. Like the moment you look through a prism, watching all the colors, forms and shapes, changing in time. Sometimes, one has these moments by regarding life itself. All things are clear. And everything seems to be ok in this special second. And interestingly, life is neither good or bad in these moments - life is. that is all. Nothing more, nothing less.

7 - Lago di Como

Student trip to italy. One of the best times I ever had in my life. Never ever felt so content. After 45 bottles including singing and playing cards, 4 am in the morning, I wrote this song. Thanks to everybody who was on that trip, that was a great time.

8 - Song for Sarah

No, Sarah is not my Ex-girlfriend. Sarah is the now nearly one year old daughter of my PhD Supervisor and friend, Kees Dullemond. Kees, as young daddies sometimes do, comes to the institute looking like overdriven by a 20-tons truck. Sarah doesnt sleep. On the contrary, she seems to be quite awake, especially at times her parents want to go to bed and 5 am in the morning. Hence, I decided to write her a lullaby. And this came out ......The last song, terminal stop tomorrow, is also a lullaby.

I don't know many composers to compare this with, but to me this music is wonderful. It is full of emotion like love and also a little sadness. I like closing my eyes while listening and it is as if the music touches me from the inside, I can feel it up to my fingertips. Before this, I never really listened to instrumental music, but now I find myself already waiting for Frithjof's next album. I find it very impressing that one person can compose pieces like these just by improvising. "Song for Sarah" and "Terminal stop tomorrow" are among my favourite pieces and altough I know taste is something that varies between people, I would really recommend this, it definately enriched my life. I give this album a 9, only to be able to give a 10 if the next album is just as good.

The stories behind the music add a little spice and flavor to this album, but even so . . . as this piano music filled my atmosphere with emotion and nuances that reached fingers of woe or joy into my heart, I felt that connection that is so critical for good music . . . that connection with another human being's feelings which speak of understanding and experience with which we all can relate . . . This is the style of piano which I like so much and could listen to for hours and hours and which amazes me because it speaks a language we can all understand . . . this improvisational piano . . . so delicate at times and at other times raging like a fire . .. it paints the picture of life . . . and all that it is and all that it can be . . . and here, as we listen, we can dream, and we can cry . . .an emotional paradox . . . relationships and experiences . . . we live them and then . . .

Simple, beautiful, ... music free of artifices which comes directly from the soul. Pay attention to "Next to you" and "Terminal stop tomorrow": the beauty they enclose and the delicate way they are played. If this is improvisation... I wonder how could be a well planned and polished composition of Brauer! Well done! (The only drawback is the terrible "click" you can hear in the middle of "Because of").

The Köln Concert vol 2?

There's a review comparing this artist to Rob Costlow, well, there's nothing in common between Costlow's kitsch and these proficient improvisations. Maybe the romantic feel of the two first tracks resembles a bit Costlow's works, but Brauer has far more sensual touch and evident emotional expression in his music. I think that more proper comparison would be the solo concerts of Keith Jarrett, and that, in my opinion, is a weakness... I must say that after listening to that so promissing single - 2AM, I was slightly disilluded by this album... What do we need a second Keith Jarrett for?! The original one still does the job pretty well. But, Nevertheless, it's a good work that deserves a listen.
