Now just for starters, Techno music in general has its own cultural value, a right to exist on the cultural map, a Daseinsberechtigung as our German friends like to say. Bands such as The Prodigy have made their mark in the genre with a range of powerful and rousing tunes that literally force you to get your ass off that barstool and onto the dancefloor. And there's the rub - Techno is designed for the dancefloor, for the club, for letting go on a Friday/Saturday night. What it isn't designed for is a lonely dark bedsit containing one sad geek and his (and it's always a "he", sexual equality fans) computer. What I'm hearing here is a moody loner with a fistful of stolen samples mixing them together with an utter lack of imagination that any 12 year-old with a sequencer and two functioning hands and a PC could churn out by the barrel-load. This is a big problem in the Techno genre - unlike rock music, classical etc where you actually have to have the ability to play an instrument, techno opens the doors to the most inept bedroom fantasists who, taking five minutes off from playing WOW, imagine they really ARE that gigantic powerful avatar and can create something worthy of equal respect in the real world. Well bad move dude....what comes out of the ass-end of creativity is a massive wart on the face of music, boring samples clicheed rhythms all wrapped up in a blanket of tediousness and unoriginality that frankly beggars belief. The only reason I wasted five minutes of my life pointing this out is that this sort of shite has to be stopped, mediocrity must be challenged. If you really want to hear some quality techno then get out and go to the clubs that play it and dance the night away. Spending the night with one hand on your dick and the other on the mixing desk really really isn't an alternative. Peace!
