About this album

  • Updated: 29/07/2008

«The 'alentejano' Daniel Catarino has kept for his second volume as Long Desert Cowboy a not so guitar-based, less Ry Cooder-esque sound than what is explored in the first volume (curiously, it's this one who gets to be titled 'Western Spaghetti).

This is an album of shades, isolation, reflexion and patience, which bets higher in 'what isn't said' than in 'what is said'. It finds some parallel in the piece "Banda sonora para um dia normal", from Landfill, another moniker from Catarino, but in this case the emphasis isn't placed in the patchwork of contrasting elements, instead it's put in the building of impressionist exercises.

"For the Money", for instance, makes itself of unknown origin sounds from different planes, delay-soaked, accompanied with patient synthesizers. In "Kicking the Sand", a monastic voice waves above some bluesy guitars and what seems to be field recordings.

As for "Tired of being fucking poor and honest", it's guitar ambient in shy levitation. with or without its companion 'Sandshoes', 'Western Spaghetti' is an apropriate record for late night mental introspection.» - Pedro Rios

Very intriguing ambient soundtracks. Meditative and contemplative. Good use of both sparse textures and occasional lush layers of interesting sounds. The degree of stereo imaging use in some passages in particular makes this music something where it is best listened to with a very good sound system (or at the very least headphones), or you'll miss a lot of the levels that have been put into it. Bravo, Daniel Catarino.

A Long Desert Cowboy. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ With Length Cowboy Serves. I like your album. It was the perfect piece of the puzzle for my project. As a filmmaker, I like to make short films and release them under the creative commons CC-BY-NC-SA license. Here is the short film I just released. It includes two tracks of your album... http://vimeo.com/30344973 http://www.facebook.com/pages/Barely-Legal-Stories/162664953817337 I put a link on this album from the facebook page of the film Good job... Cheers, Jonathan

This is minimalist music creating a poetic atmosphere. One have the chance to know what it's all about : desert, sand, ghost cities, wide lanscape. It's a kind of soundtrack of an imaginary film with no actors only empty spaces and heat. A new experience indeed. It recalls me the experimental tries made by Pink Floyd at the beginning (think about the studio album in Ummagumma).

Songs on this album move forward and is unforseeable what comes next. Sound is clear, the album is well recorded and mixed. Only "Gatillo Gatillo" is eventless, a bit more monotone than could be. Good music for moments when you need smooth down your thoughts.
