About this album

  • Updated: 24/09/2008

this is a collection of soundscapes investigating the theme of sounds generated by manmade objects; there are everyday objects (’hear beer’), objects that create more natural sounds (’acid bath’), objects designed to create sound (’toy time’) and objects made to transmit recorded sound back into the world (’radio tuna’)

all tracks have been made purely using effects and audio processing, from recordings
in set locations or of specific objects; no other sounds, synths or samples have been used.
each track also explores a specific method of production

many sounds were hurt in the making of these pieces

Hear Beer

hear beer pic

The textures and rhythms of this track become increasingly disjointed and lively throughout the track,
mirroring how we felt from the amount of beer we had to drink to get the empty cans and bottles to record.

this track includes sounds created by experimenting with rapid sample triggering.

Acid Bath

Acid Bath Pic

thanks to natty for the pic. more of her photies can be found at natfly.

have you ever sat in the bath and just let your thoughts drift someplace? this is where mine go.

the effect of space using reverb is experimented with, as well as the artifacts generated by audio stretching.
all the noises are from a bath being poured and subsequently drained

Radio Tuna

Radio Tuna pic

with the advent of digital radio and online music streams, the beautiful ambiguity and accidental harmony
of several tracks playing over the top of each other through a haze of fuzz and foreign languages
is seldom heard.
this track was made by fishing through frequencies on an ancient MW radio tuner, recording and breaking down random songs,
conversation and swept static and then recombining them.

particular use was made of EQ and filtering to layer together often contrasting material to create new rhythms.
some recorded samples were played on a turntable, manipulated and then re-recorded

Toy Time

Toy Time pic

a v-tech kids’ computer takes us through a few musical games and the deconstruction of sounds from other speaking and rhythmical toys.
the recordings are the result of being sat on the floor of a toyshop for a few hours trying to look inconspicuous.

this piece utilises glitch editing, where an audio editor is used to manually chop up, rearrange, repitch and repeat sounds.
i also started to experiment with chip bending, where you take apart and intentionally short-circuit devices to create distorted sounds

A brilliant start, nice bytes well patterned and structured, then in comes bass to fill it out and a subtle melody. I love the offshoots into other regions of the track. This track definitely has a good head on it!-) Acid Bath next gains quite a nice ambience to it and kind of flickers at you. I find the resonance a bit uncomfortable, but it grounds me with that rumbling bass. Half way through and it's kicking, and then it wanders off somewhere else for a bit, another recollection, another flash back. Radio Tuna reminded me, in concept and listening to it, the hours I used to spend just cruising the airwaves, revelling in the oddest sounds more than the actual reception. Now I can't stand radio most of the time. The first time I heart this type of experimentation was Crass/Poison Girls, times have changed a bit since then, or have they? Toy time is a vast scattering of noises and as many versions of a single track in one I haven't seen since Coldcut. Nice one!-)

Okay, *that* was fun. It also sent me on a musique concrète bender from which I still haven't recovered. =;) I particularly liked Hear Beer and the incredibly demented Toy Time. I'd never heard of chip bending before, but I'd love to know where I can find more of it!
