About this album

  • Updated: 27/10/2008

After four years in the making and recording in numerous locations and formats Illusion of Art is finally releasing its new double album "Aspirations to Fail and Disappoint." Released here is the first disc of the record. The first part of this record includes long, guitar-based, textured paintings such as "Trimorphic Protennoia," "Torture," and "Finnegan's Wake." "Finnegan's Wake" obviously has nothing to do with the traditional Irish song but is a joke on John Cage's lecture about the book. "And Now We Eclipse the Apocalypse" already had a following before its inclusion on this album with reports of people including it as ringtones and others declaring it their favorite song. "Because I Am Too Mediocre" is a song included just to irritate the listener and is not meant to be taken seriously. "When Will the Days End" is multi-layered vocal excursion in modern psychedelia and "Introspection" is a whimsical amalgam of guitar, Nintendo, C64, breakbeats, and private jokes. "Random Logic" is difficult to describe to anyone and "The Last Storm on Usher" is a combination electonic beats, beatboxing, atonal guitar, and Sprechesang. Ignore the adjective heavy nauseating liner notes and listen to this and Side A and B for whatever it is...or isn't.

Well before I begin to listen, I saw that I was about to tackle a consequent track of twelve minutes , in fact twelve minutes of variations at the guitar . We might be afraid to get bored, but not in the least. Subtle variations prevent it from being monotonous ; the clean electric guitar is very calm, with some reverb effects which give the impression of a strange atmosphere mixing water, bubbles and the earth. It slowly comes to an end, as it was expected. And then we go on Because I am too mediocre : we wake up with a strong and fast riff; a disillusioned voice, a chorus at the guitar coming here or there… However some transitions are rhythmically uncertain or even weak. Moreover, there is no end on this track : is it on purpose ? We find then again the melodic guitar of the first track; and a curious pattern on the drums, a kind of blast beat not always appropriate. The rest of the album will confirm that there isn’t a real drummer. What a shame. As for this track, electronic drums were not a good idea, it even prevents us from appreciating the voice and the melody which, in addition, are good. The end of the song goes mad on a psychedelic trip, melting the different components of the music. We can then hear on the first part of Torture something industrial, cold, frightening, instable. I really hesitated to listen the end of the track without skipping some passages because the high-pitched sounds were very disturbing. But before the third minute, deep notes arrive… and their are welcomed ! Maybe because the dominant sound is almost a « torture », the nearly eight minutes of Torture are far longer than the first track; we remember still the pleasant melodies at the guitar and we want them back. In the end, however, we have a surprise : we hear the over-distorted, desperate singing of the guitar. When will the days end ? offers a perfect transition : just between the previous atmospheres. The voice ironically reminded me of Indochine, but don’t be afraid, it is the only thing. There are always those perfect lines at the guitar, sensitive, not so much talkative but expressive enough to make us feel something interesting. On the next track, a speaking voice wanders on the piano playing. A calm, welcomed track. But before we get bored, the sound of a saturated, provocative guitar appears and reminds us that nothing is sure ; danger, insecurity is everywhere : these musicians can’t stay quiet too long ! A clear melody follows : and this harsh, skinned, then saturated voice ; then almost solemn. Yes this voice eclipses the Apocalypse, but also gives hope : the sound is too clean to give the impression that we are in hell. No, really, we are on Earth, with desolation and with beauty. With human resolutions. On the Last storm of Usher, we’re waiting to the beginning of the song, after a long introduction full of scratches and saturation. The voice doesn’t disappoint us; I noticed wonderful screams around the fifth minutes and after. And we finally come with Finnegan’s Wake, which reminds us of Trimorphic Protennoia. A real journey of its own. A very good summary – well of 16 :30 minutes however - of the whole album. An epic piece of work ? well maybe if it has been power metal… I wish I could have read the lyrics while I was listening to the music ; just to know if they give it another dimension, if they make it possible to enter further in the music. What a shame there is no real drummer ! Once we notice it on The last Storm on Usher or on Introspection, it really spoils the music somehow. Is it here an ambitious album? I’ll say yes, but it isn’t excessive : the guitar is subtle, the voice is good, and above all, it takes us to a journey through despair, hope, resolution and, sometimes, beauty. remedy lane
