Yggdrasil is, according to Norse mythology, the "world tree" that forms the link between the heavens and the sources of pure cold water and wisdom. A brilliant title for a musical work whose "branches" and "roots" extend into the many different aspects of our world - the heaven/hell of everyday life; the fragility of human relationships; the frightening night of the soul; and last but not least, the potential existence of intelligent life in outer space. The heaving rhythm of Frost im Hirn suggests an intense impression of life frozen in its own mad orbit, movement and stillness identified; the melody in Vision is poignantly beautiful, the sober and succinct arrangement evoking the limpidity of a water mirror under a clear but melancholy sky. Elegos follows with its delicate, dignified sorrow (elegy), a graceful play between luminosity and darkness - light deepening the shadows, giving life to the silhouettes embossed in the surface of a dream or a nightmare. Stille echoes Frost im Hirn with its title, style and structure, as well as with its brisk, addictive refrain that reflects the tension of brief passionate encounters, devoid of any emotional evolution. The poet Robert Browning wrote that "a man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?" Erkennen & Moral raises a real moral question of whether man has the right to reach into whatever exists beyond his grasp ("heaven") and attempt a communication with extraterrestrial life, while Drama descends into the tenebrous maze of a serial killer's psyche, mirroring another kind of "hubris" - that of man's reach into "inferno". The cycle is closed with Winter, whose austere, crystalline melodiousness leaves behind a feeling of gentle sadness and purification at the same time, like the white light of the sun on a calm wintry morning. The sensitive, expressive vocals and pristine instrumentations create an atmosphere that elicits rather than imposes thoughts, emotions and mental imagery. One might be tempted to discern a remote stylistic affinity with bands like Ultravox (also mentioned by a couple of other reviewers), Dead Can Dance or even Virgin Prunes, but the listener's own points of reference do not necessarily coincide with the artist's actual intentions or influences.

Great wheels of movement from the beginning of time, the roots of the great tree of the north. Suitably profound, with a nice, cold depth and maybe something of the acceptance of the darkness that walks hand in hand with the light, and there is the very way through the tree of life. Frost im Hirn appropriately suggests that such darkness is essentially a cooler sense of being, and if it dominates there is perhaps a necessity to cool down and avoid being hot-headed in the quest for understanding the life and the selfs place within the whole. Again, I find the phrase, 'let it flow', comes to mind and there is a nice sense of movement to the track. The cover seems to back me up on the self-searching development of the person and the species. As of old looking to the stars, once seen as the eyes of God, and the inescapable imprint of human vision in trying to capture that elusive sense of understanding. Maybe that's the Vision, I can only conjecture. I love the organic tone of the instrumentality and the gentle lyrics. Elegos, certainly has the elegant about it, a nice composition and proof of a softer side to this artist. Still retaining the coldness of the dark, but not forcing it upon you harshly because there is no need. Fine intonation. The way to understanding is not necessarily achieved by the harshness of empiricism but there may possibly be a more subtle understanding to be gained. Stille backs this up by being impossibly silent, when there is no such thing. Even if external variables are minimised the the maximum, there is still the noise of the inner rush of life. Erkennen & Moral, is at least a subjective view of the goodness of things, as they stand and as they may be in an unsure future. Such espousal of ethics in any language cannot be a bad thing. Again, quite serene and fairly serious. Nice dark pop track. The pace is picked up in Drama, the potential disaster perhaps, that was looming fifteen years ago and is even more ever present as a threat to world peace. Winter is the post-apocalyptic coldness back again, and a closure to a good album that started with that necessary chilliness. Sehr gut!-)
