I realy like this. Reminds me of Windir (melody) and Katamenia (voice). Thanks for this nice album :D
" (lol)
Polecam. Dają rade. Trochę przypominają Temnozor.
Lubię ten styl. Zimno i szybko z dobrym basem.
This is a good way to start a career in viking metal. First demo, and already showing a pretty strong sense for songwriting in the genre.
The production here is a little muddy in places (distorted guitars occasionally slip into the abyss during the heavier moments on the album). Overall, though, it's fine - the violin, acoustic guitar, drums and (to a lesser extent) the vocals shine through clearly enough, especially for a demo.
There are 7 tracks all told. The first is one of the best songs, starting with a beautiful acoustic passage that leads into a pounding-yet-melodious headbanger with raw harsh vocals and a great solo. The following songs follow in a similar vein, without a lot of variation. The final track, though, is a short instrumental outro with great atmosphere and nice drum/guitar work that serves as a little variation in the formula and sums up the feel of Voluspa quite nicely.
The vocals here are kind of average for the style typical of the folk/viking genre; black metal oriented growls/screams, with some clean-ish vocals that feel far away (either due to the production or on purpose, I'm unsure). They're not spectacular, but not poor either, and certainly suit the other instruments displayed on the album, so I give kudos on that... they just need some work. This, and work in varying the songwriting a little, are the main issues with Voluspa. This album is free to download at Jamendo, and is worth any fan of the genre's time to try out.
Stand-out tracks: Genese des Mondes, Des Cendres Renaitront les Mondes, Epilogue
Very good album. This is what black metal is supposed to sound like.
