About this album

  • Updated: 30/01/2008

This is the second Musictrade album release from English electronica artist Softspace, following his Experiments at the Edge of Time. Where the debute album was built mostly on fairly light and uncomplicated synth material, this new album is definitely more experimental and ambivalent in nature. Synth-based material is still prominent but now it is intimately combined with field recording / foundsound material in the form of 'documentary soundscapes' and radiophonic style constructs. From these ingredients Softspace creates a new imaginary world full of curious aural details for Mahler's imaginary cat to step in and start to explore. To give a rough style/genre pointer, think of psychedelic Stockhausen with bits of Beatlesque leaking through the scenery.

*********************** strange dream It is in the land of strange dreams and open spaces that this artist invite us . If you like the sudden and incongruous sounds coming gently caress your soul and your ears , you've come to the right place . More ... Softspace is apparently a prolific artist , leaving matter to be discovered.

Really surprisingly good. It's a long album filled with calm yet sometimes threateningly introvert moods. Nothing especially strikes out (apart from a couple bits of sound collage), it's a subtle work demanding patience. I just get a strange feeling when I listen to this album. Let's just say the cover sums it up perfectly... emotionless, apart from being curious, seeing the world from a new view.

I looked long the cat's eyes on the album cover. Even without wanting to be influenced by this, the music of this album has a very special sound. I had a couple of cats, but they died of old age. So I could not let them hear this music .... but my impression is that they would find interesting to listen to this album. There are many songs that make me think and convinced of this. The frequencies of the sounds are very special and original. A cat also loves what we do not see ... voices and sounds to us incomprehensible for a cat is a real delight! Who has a lighter sleep and many dreams will find this album very pleasant.

Nice and organic, burbling and truly symphonic in places. Beautiful stuff! And, from that to the minute introspection of The Touchstone shows to me a variety of abilities. Impressions was like the last minute of the world as its memory flashed before its' eyes. Now, if you will excuse me, I must be on my way... Tundra, makes me think of dugouts in the hard earth and covered with the same cold soil and snow for insulation. The lull outside that cold can have on the brain, 'just go to sleep'. The last words I said to my mum, bless her. (The 5th symphony, weirdly helped). Anyway, the tundra lulls you into a state of security, one way or the other. It can be a very desolate place, which necessitates a desolate piece in a fashion. Feels more Russian to me, but then I suppose it would. Subway Trip reminds me of a certain frame of mind I have been in, coming at you from all angles, in a jumble. I'd hate to be underground when I was. Too closed in and I like my freedom too much. Nature was more my way because I had access to it then. Now I'm just doing the suburban relapse thing (Siouxsie and the Banshees fan). Tooday is like a whirling dervish of an inner broil. Tumultuous introvertism that really hits the core of my soul. Voices on the air are quite serene and peaceful, sometimes they bicker but this is a spirited conjunction of sonic understanding in a mellow way. Maybe not no so much as voices as experiences of ways of being. Trippers take you right to the core of the primal scream, flashback after flashback, in a constantly altering state of existence. Everytime you think something is secure, it seems not to be there, but then you realise it always was but now it sounds different. And then things calm down, be that a serene subconscious or simple placid unconsciousness. And, then to the recovery. Navigation in such regions of experience can open such doors that are rarely, ordinarily accustomed to be open, with a little reminder to close them behind you when you've finished. But such charted and uncharted regions, and what we know probably isn't even the tip of the iceberg, in so many ways we live our lives, not knowing. Some frustratingly trapped, some unaware, some actually contradictory. Here I know there is a deep sense of honesty and soulfulness and it's to be shared by all, if they want. The map is in your hands.
