About this album

  • Updated: 08/05/2009

When the Abyss Stares Back is an odd collection of songs I have been working on between 2006 and 2009. Albeit the individual tracks are quite different, I feel they still belong together and tell a story.

After the melodic acoustic guitar lines of Decision, followed by the slightly melancholy-laden ambience of Shapeshifter Romance, the album ventures into more introspective territories and gets progressively darker and more electronic. The distant closing echoes of The Lake provide a gentle, almost cinematique transition between the acoustic world and the grand synthetic opening sounds of the title track. The album reaches its most majestic yet desolate moments during the slowly evolving circular chromatic structures of Red Desert Sunrise, then fades into the windy alien landscape.

Listen to it alone in the dark, preferably in the summer, under a starlit sky.

Very gentle, melodic, harmonic, peaciful work. Musically, it's a ten. Mixwise, it sounds rather unfinished, or rushed. Knowing the other works of Janos Novak, it adds to the wide spectrum of musicality he is capable of. With better engineering, this record could fly right into the top list.

pas de piste préférée : tout est bon ! C'est planant, envoutant... Les rythmiques sont simples mais leur présence donne de la consistance aux nappes d'ambiance. Un album tout en douceur et très bien construit que j'ai adoré dès la première écoute.
