About this album

  • Updated: 21/09/2009

Antelope is my first real attempt at working alone. The material here had no outside imput, and no other contributions other than mine, no professional recording techniques, nothing.... It was me a variety of instruments, toys and homemade objects and an 8-track recorder. The album is extremely lo-fi and should probably be listened to over headphones rather then speakers.

This album is influenced more by folk, indie, and pop-rock artists then my former album was. The aggressive distortion soaked guitar has been replaced with a texture oriented acoustic guitar, and clean instruments drenched in reverb. It's still rather bass heavy (in fact moreso than Biscuit is) and makes use of keyboards and violin on a couple songs. Since I didn't have to worry about anyone elses opinions or imput I was able to experiment more and comprimise less. This album is about 3/4 planned and 1/4 improvised.

The lyrics are alot more introverted then anything I've written before, songs on this album have to do with inanimate objects, communism, astronauts, childhood, and crossdressers.

Everything is rather mysterious-sounding. A lot is implied rather than spelled out completely, meaning that the listener can interpret the music in many ways. The artist claims no outside influences, but this does remind me a bit of Jandek - if Jandek were more diverse. Overall, "Antelope" has hushed atmospherics, sparse arrangements, and through the reverb-drenched sound, conveys much. I'm really into this album, even if I'm not describing its moody effect very well... but it works for me.

Uniquely different from anything else I've heard before. I truly enjoyed every song on this album and in comparison to previous endeavors I think this one is far superior. The music pulls you in many places at once. Incidentally this is not a bad thing as the lack of direct focus drives you to pay better attention to the subtleties.
