the voice of Frederick reminds me of Arthur Russell and Bob Dylan on the album John Wesley Hardy, in a great way - but so much more enjoyable to listen to, nice horny nasal quality to some of the emphasised syllables
the bass is excellent throughout, and i love the dissonant vocal harmonies, quite 60s in conception. some fantastic acoustic guitar solos: 'Angel on the Sand' 'Drivin West' (Drivin West also features a great sophistication in the arrangements of chordal harmony.... just the odd few unexpected but highly melodic changes)
'My Dear Friend' is a great cross between neil young, incredible sting band and fleet foxes and something off of bob dylan's john wesley hardy. it's pretty much too long (i got bored after 3 & a 1/2 minutes)
I'm loving the slightly sarcastic nod to songs of yore in 'Folk Song' a nice meandering ballad, that doesn't do much but is very satisfying to listen to.
'I Don't Know Anything' comes in at a great time, just as things really start to slow down, a more upbeat, kind of cuban rhythm comes in, kind of like a john lennon style understated rock song
in terms of production i like the 'brick wall' effect of the reverb, and the complex rhythms working against each other makes me forget there's no percussion. double tracking vocals is almost always a win (it definitely is here). generally the mixing/mastering is really good, there's this slight lo fi 'under-produced' sound, despite being very polished, it's probably too dynamic for radio play, but then that's a good thing right?
some of the tracks seem to be 'pumping' during a few of the louder moments, it's forgiveable cos i love this album so
It just goes on way too long.... 72 minutes, i like most of this, but i don't want too much of a good thing you know, that's just me... i think if this was to be performed live it'd be great at the kind of length it is, with the inclusion of some percussion (a cahone and hihats i think), the audience would be able to get a bit of shoe-gazing grooving going on.
