Enfin!! Le nouvel album est arrivé, après 10 mois ça valait la peine d'attendre.Un son de qualité (voix-instruments )en harmonie parfaite, comme d'habitude c'est du travail de pro .MERCI et BRAVO ! :))
So for those who follow this band and read these reviews they know I was not overtly impressed with Angelic Asylum. It was kind of "all over the place"... like OS was trying to hard. I'm about 3 tracks into this new album and am compelled to write this. In Angelic Asylum (AA) the synths were stuffed down your throat and you either liked the way they tasted or, like me, it annoyed you.
Evershade is apparently different. There are synths in this and they don't try to hide that fact; however, they've also decided to go with moniker "industrial symphonic" as opposed to "symphonic gothic metal". I am an avid fan of symphonic gothic metal and have certain expectations of the genre which, in my review of AA I felt it needed pointed out that they fell short of. Good singer (and in a genre filled to the gills that's oddly different), but the music was not what it needed to be. So I get an email (thanks HavocS) letting me know this album is out.
First I note the genre label change. Seems more apt. I think I would of been more inclined towards AA if it was labeled the same way. Anyway, I rant and am off the topic.
Evershade does something that I like. They put the female singer infront (who is a pretty decent singer in her own right), the guitars next, and layered down at bottom is the synth providing melody and music development. Bravo for this choice. It shows maturity and growth. AA put the synths in your face and were as equally "front row" as the singer. It was very off putting. Changing the genre, as often happens in bands (Anathema anyone?), also changed my expectations. So when I hit play I was groving with this album.
Point of contention... at or about Die with Me, I found my mind wondering and loosing interest. Since OS is in a nitch genre I wonder if they thought to add male vocals, or some vocal counter point (another female in a different range) to help when the album lags. Like I said, she is a decent singer... and does deserve to be right where she is in the band... but I question whether or not she is truly capable of carrying the whole album by herself. It gets, not boring, or repetitive... just I find myself not wanting to listen anymore.
Sum up: Evershade is a step in the right direction for this band. Genre change sets a different expectation which this album meets and exceeds. Singer is great but after about 17 minutes one begins to loose interest which begs the question whether or not she is capable of carrying an album to completion. Still.. worth a listen and a donation! Which reminds me.. I'm still kind of new here... where the heck is the donation BUTTON!?!?!
Obsidian Shell is one of my favourite bands, definitely in top 5. Speaking of their previous albums, Elysia had a kind of early "amateurish" feel, but it was still great and incredibly promising. Angelic Asylum was nearly perfect (though I wish there were more somgs in Hungarian). "Orphanage" and "Starfall" are among the best symphonic metal tracks ever.
Unfortunately, in Evershade I see a negative change. No songs really stand out, it sounds more "generic". As suggested by the new genre label, there are stronger industrial elements, which, from my point of view, is just bad. As "Industrial/Symphonic metal", Evershade is probably perfectly fine, but I strongly dislike this genre shift. This album is definitely not bad, but it just does not live up to the expectations I had from the previous albums.
super dernier album tout comme a ete les autres et je voudrais bien voir d'autres clip video a ce jour j'en connais qu'un fait sur Summoner Of The Wind de l'album angelic asylum
I dig it!
Niestety ale ten album mnie nie zachwycił.
Wokal kobiecy niezbyt pasuje do tego typu muzyki.
Przy dłuższym słuchaniu robi się monotonny i niezbyt spójny z graną muzyką...
Again, I've never been a very big metal fan, while my tastes vary, I've never really gotten into metal. Obsidian Shell makes me really want to give the genre a second chance though!
Listening to Angelic Asylum and Evershade one right after the other, there's a definite difference in the two albums. I can't say which is better, because honestly, I find that I enjoy listening to one just as much as the other. It sounds to me like Obsidian Shell has grown in their music since Angelic Asylum, they've progressed and changed a little, and I like that! I think that they're showing even more promise than they did before.
The only thing I really wonder is if perhaps they should get some background voices on some of the songs. There were one or two on the new album that I think would have been better with someone accompanying in the singing, I think that, had they done that, it would have accentuated her voice more. But, that is just my opinion, and the album was excellent without it.
I'm really impressed with the band, I'd love to see them get the recognition they desserve. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them!
