About this album

  • Updated: 01/08/2011

Using live instruments (including a 118 year old un-tuned zither) and shortwave radio samples, Stillness in Motion was made primarily as an exploration of mortality. I tried to express a concept that the raw futility of life is also the force that gives it meaning. Abandoned structures, forgotten graves, neglect, and lasting dignity among others are all motifs of this album.  Like my last album the tracks are figurative and specific in subject, though their character is somewhat more diffuse.

Fans of longer and electronically produced ambient music will likely not find this appealing. If the songs were presented the same way a portrait is then these are small and intensely made abstract paintings - not the huge, minimalist abstract paintings you'd associate with drone or ordinary ambient music.

Oryginaly album, ideal for musical freaks and fans of all sonic experiments ... Very good production and generaly concept of this creation - I'm under impression of this music... Psycho - music, bravo!

Worthy follow-up to "Interference"

Somnium's second Jamendo outing will no doubt sound familiar to those listeners already acquainted with his excellent "Interference". On this latest album there is the same preoccupation with building atmospheric tracks using shortwave radio fragments, ambient keyboard sounds, occasional acoustic instruments (in this case guitar and zither) as well as a variety of other samples. Overall the album has a more ethereal feel to it and for the most part lacks the brooding intensity of its predecessor. The opening track sets the tone for the remainder of the album - indeed "Beautiful Decay" might have served as a title for the whole work. I can't recall hearing this subject being treated so irresistibly since Michael Nyman's "Swan Rot" from the score of A Zed and Two Noughts. If there is a criticism to be made then it is that the album perhaps fails to live up to the promise of the opening few minutes. Still, it must also be pointed out that there is an inherent beauty in all of the tracks that follow even if the momentum is slightly lacking. I'm hoping that Somnium will choose to develop his sound further on future releases and build on the solid foundations of his first two Jamendo albums. In the meantime "Stillness in Motion" confirms that he is one of the most interesting artists currently active on this site. Any fans of ambient or dark ambient music would be foolish not to check him out.
