About this album

  • Updated: 14/08/2011

This album collects recordings that I did over a 1½-year period that fell into two categories. The first category consists of songs mostly taken from Carl Sandburg's American Songbag, a wonderful collection of songs from early America. There's also a Stephen Foster song, "Beautiful Dreamer", which was a favorite of my grandfather's — though I'm not sure what he would have thought of this particular arrangement.

The other songs are nursery rhymes, which I started recording for a never-completed project of children's books. It turned out that my nursery rhyme recordings didn't really work so well for the children's books, because I made the songs a bit too weird, or dark, or what have you. There are, in some cases, I must admit, some added verses as well.

Hey Noel. What you have here are 2 great albums - one with bizarre nursery rhymes that have weird appeal. The other album is full of original sounding gems that make an unusual and enjoyable sound. Worth re-releasing as 2 albums? Yes, yes yes!!!

Worth listening to, wade out some of the 'filler' to get the good stuff

Some of these children's songs are ridiculously scary, i love the reworking, it's almost as if they fit right in with the meaning -the opening 'Rock A Bye Baby' (isn't that about shaking babies cos they wont stop crying? pretty dark thoughts...) is well referenced at track 5 with 'Beautiful Dreamer' and nicely contrasted with a bit more light hearted jangly country/folk in between. 'Rock A Bye Baby #2' is a good inclusion to reference from the first, but perhaps i would have been happy with just those three? Noel Bush has a really great voice on some of these tracks, notably 'Come To Lane County' 'Midnight Special'.the more 'acoustic' sounding tracks are my favourite which shares some similarities to the works of those 'new' Americana of Bill Callahan and Doug Paisley I think mostly what let's the album down is it's great length: with some brutal editing i feel this albums could be really special, the arrangements are really good throughout, jovial and sarcastic, really compliments the selection of lawless cowboy songs, and 60s style psychedelic sound. for this reason i'm not quite giving it a rating of 'good'.... but if it was maybe half the length or so, i'd say perhaps it'd get an 8
