Liner Notes: Island In The Moonlight  (Part 2 of 2)

This album is dedicated to Wolfsong.thePoet (Barbara) who inspired me into making my work better and to Carybe (Carlos) who nagged me into making it better. (Both were successful in their own way.)

So, here we go again with more examples of 'progressive looping' as Carybe has named it.

The first track, on this album, is the complete part one, and the next five are the tracks divided up into chapters. (Thank you, Barbara.)

01 Island In The Moonlight (Full Version Part 2)--as one large track.

02 The Stagger Dance--feeling a bit tipsy (can you hear the 'buzz') from overindulgence on fermented coconut juice from the celebration, he weaves his way to the beach where he's set upon by a pirate crew who've come ashore for drinking water. A good fight ensues but he's finally overcome when an old sack is pulled over his head (you can hear it in the muffled sound of the music at that point.) He's then thumped and he's hauled back to their waiting vessel. Shanghaied!

03 Who Will Mend My Broken Heart--the shanghaied sailor's thoughts turn to his lost love as he toils for hours aboard the pirate ship under watchful eyes. The penalty for trying to escape is death--but they can't stop his mind from escaping.

04 Into The Sea--the former First Mate sees his chance to escape, to make his way aft in the darkness to the stern of the pirate ship and dive into the black sea. He plans to swim through the heaving waves all the way back to the island in the moonlight--or die trying.

(Can you feel the waves? I tried. Also note the 'catch' of the strings--like a cry in the night--I like that 'catch', I actually do that a lot in my music. It gives you a little 'start' of the unexpected--and keeps you awake. ;-)

05 Lament For A Lonely Lady--upon the moonlit shore sits the one who loves him. A night and a day have passed and back into night again--telling her that it's been too long, that he won't be returning.

(NOTE: In the next track I've extended one of my original pieces from months ago that was way too short: Spring In Love--just for Wolfsong.)

06 Lost Love By Moonlight--the other women gather behind her. (After the opening of the piece--the first 2 minutes) Dahna thinks back one last time of the love in his eyes for her, the happiness they shared together for such a short time. Finally, never to feel it again is too great a burden for her heart and she slowly moves into the water.

But suddenly she hears a man's voice, his voice, her beloved's voice, calling her name from the waves...or is it from the bottom of the sea?

Not knowing which, she moves forward into the foaming swells to join him one way or the other...

...they embrace.

And then dance once again upon the ocean in the pale moonlight...

Ah . . what a romantic you are, Mr. GingerTom . . This story could be sub-titled, "Shanghaied!" and is a major adventure Involving lots of drama, with text and music conveying the perils of an over-abused sailor, who's name I do not know, . . . but I can see his young intense face . .. pale blue eyes searching the horizon for some escape, pursed lips indicating an inner focus and strength . . . a downturn to his features betraying his sorrow .. . a furrow to his brow laying out the roadmap to his worries, and yet a straightness in his spine showing courage and determination . . . The music dances thoughtfully with the words of the story, telling us more of the tale of this shipwrecked sailor, while sharing the fragrances of his heart, his love evident in all he does . .. his compass is turned towards the one who captured that great big heart . . . this protagonist seems to be always trying to find the way home from some misadventure or other . . . From demanding violin strings in "The Stagger Dance," to twangy guitar strings in the melancholic "Who Will Mend My Broken Heart," to the pretty yet powerful piano of "Into The Sea," and the cello and calling voices of "Lament For A Lonely Lady," ending with the heart pounding piano of "Lost Love By Moonlight" where another near disaster was narrowly diverted . . . the music carries us along with the story and gives us insight into the narrative and the mood of the hero and Dahna, his lady . . . Regarding "Progressive Looping": I have been given to understand that a large number of musicians on Jamendo create their music with loops and samples. As I have mentioned before, if you want to make your music with a kazoo in a shower and the music appeals to me . .. it is good. I have never cared about other people's opinions . . those belong to those other people . . . my opinions belong to me . . . I, personally, appreciate this music because its like making a patchwork quilt .. .. moving pieces of music around and fitting them together . . . making a vision out of your music is not easy . . and making it attractive is definitely not easy. And then adding all those final touches that give it that extra personality . . that undefined aspect that is the signature sound of the musician .. . .is the final piece . . . and in my opinion shows an accomplished artist . . . and this musician does a beautiful job . . . The whole album has enormous appeal . . . and as I said before, after enjoying the story as if it were a play . . . with the characters appearing in the active brains of the listener, the music is also excellent to let play just to enjoy as a musical interlude for a relaxing moment . . . and of course . . . I want to thank GingerTom for his kind dedication to me and Carybe . . . I was very surprised and also touched . . . Hey, GT, I hope you know that I would have listened to it anyway . . . I always look forward to your latest album . . I really love your productions . . .

Let´s not forget, that this album is just half of the story and that there's a story going along with it. And its important to keep that in mind, because I believe that it exerts an important role as a guide line. The story is not exhaustive and conveniently serves as a background to each track and in a first instance, also suits the purpose of stimulating our musical appetite. Some adequacy is undeniably recognizable and even considering the diversified set of tracks as a whole, a general sense of homogeneity, can still be deducted. The choice of the sounds... or instrumental sonorities... are well done and even get to produce some quite delicious moments, even quite contrasting, yet, without showing no noticeable discrepancies. The capacity of musical construction achieved a very good level and is structurally remarkably acceptable, with a minor repair on the track "Who Will Mend My Broken Heart", where some sounds... which are inherent to the hand movement over the cords of an acoustic guitar... produce unwittingly and because of the structural and characteristics of the work, one or other adverse effect. To denote also a very good sense of musicality and capacity of composition or structuring. Summing... I think that overall, it's a stimulating musical experience, with a captivating atmosphere, soundly diversified and filled with delightful details... ... and don't you even dare to think for a second, that the dedicatory has had any effect over this review... do you read me?... just imagine... me, nagging? Thank you. Obs: I strongly recommend the downloading, for a proper listening and evaluation, since the on line experience is quite poor.
