I was still picking up peanuts when I continued. "What I'm trying to say is this. Couldn’t we find them and get them to reverse the procedure? If they’ve got the technology to rearrange things, then it only stands to reason that they’ve got the technology to make backups – in case they screw something up during the operation."
"If someone screwed up, why would they reveal themselves to us? What’s in it for them? If they’re covering their tracks, even now, it’s going to get progressively harder to find them, and even if we do manage to corner someone, odds are, they won’t have access to the appropriate equipment or backups to do a restoration," she replied. "Most days I don’t think that you even want me to remember who I used to be."
"I can’t deny that," I said, mulling it over a bit. I was done picking up the peanuts, and started lining them up in rows of five on the tray in front of me.
"The chances of anybody from Synchro doing anything that will help us are astronomically against us. I’m already very lucky that I ended up meeting you and that you are the person that you are."
"Thanks." I blushed a little. Things like that still made me feel kind of shy.
"More than one in a million. One in billions upon billions upon billions, probably," she said, opening her own package of peanuts with much more grace than I had. She dumped a couple into her hand and threw them into her mouth.
