Nosphares - Dark Desires

Dark Desires has a really nice, well made feel to it, like someone has really put some idea into it, and it shows. The production may not be perfect, but the songs make up for it by far. A very talented album from a very talented author.

There is some real talent in Cynicism, the guitars and vocal works are superb, and the drumming is quality by a mile. The tracks on TPoSSD are really great, well thought out and considered appropriately.

The intro really lulls you into this album, which then proceeds to grab you by the throat and make you shut up and listen to it - and damned well done too. They don't rush into it like some other bands, the let the music flow and release the best bits at just the right times. There's an ambient overlayer that does the album a world of good, too.

Weirdland have put soul into this album - you can feel it as you listen to the energetic guitar solos and the throbbing bass - but a lot of the time the vocalist sounds like he's trying too hard. A pleasant album to listen to, definitely, but certainly not a groundbreaker. Still, the album manages to make me want to bop along.

'Vallhalla for Reward' especially has a good beat and steady guitar work. I doubt there is anyone who can listen to this album and say that overall it was bad, that would be a lie.

WANNAbe - The End (single)

WANNAbe

The End (single)

It seems like WANNAbe have tried to be 'different' and 'daring' by adding all sorts of electronic elements to this, but it fails entirely. The robot voice is outdated, and so is this altogether.

ARAI

SOCIEDAD ENFERMA

Arai have really excelled themselves with this album - they have really brought out some wonderful heavy metal, and even punk, into the open. It didn't matter to me that the lyrics were in Spanish, a language which I fail to understand, the music did all the talking and expression.

A pretty solid album.

You Will Come is a good example of power metal, but the problem is simply that it sounds very similar to other artists - which, to be entirely honest - is possibly the biggest problem with music today; lack of originality.

That being said, there are some nice things about this album. The guitar work is close to superb, and the synth add a nice touch - an unusual choice of synth 'voice', but it works well with the album as a whole.

Encompassing the sounds of modern metal and rock and fusing it with a Dream Theater-like quality, JT has really excelled himself on this one. There is a mood that continues throught, keeping you into the album whether you're listening it while doing something else or not. This is good listening music for pure listening, not just necessarily a soundtrack to your daily routine, but, however, it does that superbly too.

It was like listening to Yes, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment and Megadeth having a big jam. A great album from a great guy.

Holy Pain - Last Sigh

Holy Pain

Last Sigh

30/06/07

Holy Pain are the best thing to come out of France since the renaissance, seriously. There are now a lot of French bands on the metal scene, Gojira just to name one, but Holy Pain whoops their ass mercilessly. The only thing to come out of this album is exactly what it says - pure, undiluted, metal. It makes you want to get up and dance, especially to songs like 'Last Sigh' and 'No Regret'.

The fast melodies on this album give it something that even the most famous bands like Stratovarius and Dream Theater long for - getting their fans to not like their stuff because it's unconditional, but simply because it is really something special, how many bands can say that?

The intro to 'Nuclear' is well thought out, and really sums the whole album up. This album will make you want to headbang throughout - not to be missed.
