Pleasant surprise with this one. The voice is not quite my style, and some of the anunciation is a little extreme for my taste, but there is no denying the songwriting skills and ear for a good arrangement from this guy. There are a myriad of people who 'channel' The Beatles, but few do it with skill and care. I really like this stuff. The songs are dripping with more hooks than a fisherman's tackle shop. A great job.
Having trawled through a few albums this evening and been reduced to an almost comatose torpor by lounge/trance/chill (all of which I dislike!) It was wonderful to have this band explode out of the speakers and grab me by the throat! Its like Napalm Death and the Chili Peppers invited Steve Vai over for a jam! I get to Portugal quite a lot (love the place) and i'll be checking these guys out if I see them advertised in Lisbon.
I have a problem with labels. Hell, I can't even really categorize my own stuff! But I can't call The Gasoline brothers alternative, unless they're an alternative to mediocrity. This is great pop by anyone's yardstick, and I love the 'exclamation' titles of their albums, it's a small thing, but these little commercial techniques go a long way to getting you into people's heads. There's a smattering of "They might be giants" fairy dust in there - especially on "sleeping pills and asteroids". All in all a great addition to the pop canon.
From the opening stereopanned hypnotic indian riffs, this album began to reel me in. Expertly executed performances from all."She" - a great rock song sandwiched between the aforementioned indianizms and a beautiful chamber orchestra finale! Then the straightahead riffing of sirens gets serious. Comparisons to anyone do this band a disservice. "Sense", like "She" makes fine use of the stereo picture in its intro. Simple but effective. Great contemporary rock harmonies, just enough edge to the singer's vocals - which are inherently listenable. You get the feeling that this band's creative well runneth over.A truly great rock album, by anyone's standards.
Every once in a while, and indeed, very, very rarely, an artist comes along that is truly unique. They are a select group of individuals indeed, and the Diablo Swing Orchestra deserve to be card-carrying members of that very exclusive club. There are more ideas in one of their songs than in a 100 mainstream commercial releases. The vocal was a little off-putting to me initially, but it quickly became clear that she has complete mastery of her art, and adds beautifully to the mix. The production is stunning, the execution sublime. The juxtaposition of swing, gypsy, operatic and hard rock elements is explosive. This album is beyond awesome. You need a new category.
Niiiice.... so good to hear new rock music that actually ROCKS. A great band with quality pervading everything, performance, instrumentation, songwriting, production. Good job.
Although I understand a little Spanish, as an English musician living in Spain, I usually struggle to get past the language barrier with music from other countries. But Magnolia make a mockery of that distinction. Their groove is universal, when that guitar rips, and the bass and drums lock down tight, they're speaking my language. Chilean cool pervades every track, and confidence abounds. A great record.
