Dylan72 offers a fair description of these tracks. They are enjoyable and well constructed, except for being too short and abruptly ended. I hope Benito Quintana will upload more--and longer--tracks soon. As is, I might not intentionally listen to these tracks very often, but I would enjoy having them in the mix when hit the "shuffle" button.
Thank you for rereleasing this album. Any shortcomings in the sound quality are outweighed by the quality of the compositions and performances themselves. Vocal affects such as whooping or Native American-sounding singing that could sound pretentious or odd are carried off with great success to make the songs distinctive and emotionally effective. This is a very enjoyable album that I plan to download and share with friends who like folky "singer-songwriter" music. I think the album has potential for wider distribution if it were remade with higher sound quality.
A creative and well-crafted album that will please any indi-loving ear. This generous, 24-track collection was apparently recorded in 2002. I'm going to be sad when the last back-logged album is posted from the Saint-Jean ouvre, but I will keep my fingers crossed that the band will continue to produce new albums and share them on Jamendo.
I agree with Belzu: this album is contagious! I keep thinking I should move on to listen to some more new albums, but instead I start playing this one over again. I love the bird solo on "hey you", which just gets funnier with each listen. The "ain't no cloud" track is missing, so I'm waiting until it is repaired before I download the album (the missing track stops the album so it doesn't advance to the next song). If it isn't fixed soon, though, I'll have to make a "Nobody is Nobody" playlist without it so I can start playing the album in my car and on my iPod.
Saint-Jean knows the art of the light touch, and employs it on Les animaux écrasés (2006/2007)to create another excellent album. Thanks, Saint-Jean!
I don't really know how to judge this style of music, but I enjoyed this track and would like to hear more.
This is one of those rare cases when a European band has mastered American musical traditions and has made its own very fine and original contribution. Great album!
I'm shocked by the extremity of the negative reviews. I wish I could read them better, but my French is mostly guess-work. Based on that guess-work, though, I think I probably agree with Ben and Dsillusion. This is a rich, layered, and beautifully performed album. I hope to hear more from anabas in the future!
