Interesting really. Opens with electric experimental music (a good reminder of Throbbing Gristle), and ends with organic, analogue feel - still experimental. A good piece of sound art with rich texture.

I'll download this album, get the song title translated, and give it a second listen, and then, I expect, I will find out some more. I would like to listen to "branca de zezinho de abreu (rascunho 2)" (track 6) while walking through a half-empty underground/subway station in Tokyo at night - how will it feel?

Thank you for sharing.

Canoply Games - N Bi End

Canoply Games

N Bi End

20/05/09

Another reviewer says this is "sound for nightmares". I'm inclined to agree with him, though the "nightmare" for me is just a metaphor, and I like this album very much.

These nine songs here are basically so dark that you will find it hard to dance to this album. If you want to dance with a smile on your face, there are a lot of good music for that purpose other than this album on jamendo. If you want to hear something compelling, inner-ward music, this is it. This is a beautifully constructed electric soundscape, rather than soundtrack: this music cannot be a back-ground piece. You've got to pay attention to what you hear second after second. Ambient, avant-garde, experimental, harsh-noise, minimal, and whatsoever.

For instance, One more day (track 1) starts with minimal beats, followed by clear synth melodies with harsher noise backtrack. Distorted electric guitar (or something: I'm not a musician so please forgive my inaccuracy) plays a beautiful melody somewhere in the distance. Different sounds and beats are beautifully merged into one song. Stroke (track 3) - this song reminds me of No New York influenced Japanese avant-garde music in the 1980s, and yet it is very original - sounds like more conventional "experimental" music (oxymoron) at first, and you'll find yourself listening to a avant-garde electric funky tune, and then, slightly cheesy fusion pop. Scaffold for everyone (track 4: what a song title) is a happier, guitar-driven piece with piano, but as wicked as a song can be. Nervous break-up (track 6) and Bridge (track 7) are the most rock 'n' roll on this album - I'd like to hear them on Steve Albini fan radio.

Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work.

Despite the sound quality, as explained by musictomyears, this EP is full of energy and power. I was somehow reminded of a live recording of Eyehategod which I came across years ago. If you are into so-called sludge, doom-metal, post-metal, and/or post-hardcore, you won't be let down. It's a shame because The Gloaming (track 3) should have sounded one thousand times better before the hard drive collapse. But still, I like this distorted, garage-rock sound full of energy.

Thank you for sharing.

The Mixtapes Vol.3

14/05/09

I've been listening to the Mixtapes Vol. 1-3. Amazing world-beat trilogy. I'm posting my review here because I especially like this album, which is so very calming and refreshing, flowing nicely. I think I hear some singing of autumnal insects in tracks 4 and 5. This feels as if it's a crisp evening in October, moonlit and calm. The Yao Jing Parade (track 7), which must be 妖怪大行進 in Japanese - I hope Chinese speakers agree - is a track that sums up this trilogy and brings a smile to everyone who hears it. :)

These three instrumental albums let you travel around the world virtually. Unicite successfully made these various soundclips/samples into lovely tracks. Some of them sound like Asian (Southern, Western or Eastern: Indian sitar, Chinese fiddle etc). Others feel like Celtic, African, Spanish, Latin American, and so on. What is more, they are all combined very nicely. Thus here's this beautiful "East meets West" feel. And this is not something traditional you find in a "world/folklore music" shelves, but modern electronic music that is very original. The production is excellent and every track sounds great.

I'm looking forward to your new project, Unicite. Thank you for sharing. Peace. :)

deied - the end

Thanks for inviting me. :) The whole album is well-organised, well-structured and good-sounded. A good reminder of the late 80s and early 90s industrial music such as FLA, sometimes with little bit of metal/death metal favour (guitar solos etc).

Hard Stuff (track 2) and Monster (track 5) are really my cup of tea, though the latter is a bit thin for my taste (I'm a fan of strong bass line). She Master (track 3) is so dark that it can scare you at night. I think Liar (track 7) is the best song on this album - I like the way the song progresses. Far From Home (track 8), another track I like, has a good atmosphere and memorable keyboard riffs.

Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.

ZEALOT - Utopia(single)

ZEALOT

Utopia(single)

I listened to this EP, then visited ZEALOT's MySpace page, and am absolutely amazed by the variety of his musical style. Masa, you've got to upload more songs on jamendo. Show off your talent.

This track would be best described as "post rock" even though I (as well as many other people) hate to use this tag. ZEALOT is a multi-instrumentalist called Masa, and still, this song has a "band" atmosphere, which is great. The song itself feels like something sweet you eat during some brainy work: soothing, refreshing and energising.

When I first listened to this album, I was reminded of how I felt I first listened David Holmes' second album.

These fifteen tracks on this album never bore you, swaying from "experiental" tracks with minimal beats and spoken words, to funky, dancy, bouncy tracks.

I'm relatively new in here, but I'm sure Hallucination Layer is one of the most inspiring and talented musicians on Jamendo. He (or she?) knows what s/he is doing, and his/her music sounds great.

I'm a fan of dark ambient music, instrumental triphop, instrumental funk music, industrial music, and so, if you are into these, here are what you want. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Thanks for sharing.

Divan - I simply love this track. Not only as a piece of music, but also as a way to use a public domain text. A lecture given in 1889 - 120 years ago - has been given a new life in 2009 beautifully, and in a very modern way. I say this even though that I know "modern" is always relative - synth didn't exist in 1889, did it? I'm sure that sitar exited at the time, but not sure if John Caird, the author, had a chance to hear the sound.

Tzal - Beyond words. Different traditions are perfectly woven together. It begins with beautiful ambient drone with jazzy bass line, and haunting female voice tells you something - you don't know what you are being told because of the language barrier (I don't, but it does not matter). Then you find yourself listening to the piano, which is like something you hear, say, in the film "Casablanca"... Is there a better way to spend 11:34 in a rainy lazy day?

Falling

06/05/09

I've been a fan of music by churst (and churst1), and there already are plenty of good reviews here - which one to agree with, I can't choose - but anyway this is an excellent dark-ambient/dubstep track with rich texture.

The first track has more bass and words/voice. As a speaker of English as second language, "falling", "just falling", "keep falling". "but" and "cage" are the only words I could hear (before reading the description given above). The music tells a lot. The voice, and the treatment of it, reminds me of the impression I got when I first heard the Gift by the Velvet Underground (20 years ago!). The second track, Falling-instrumental, in which I hear a lot more piano, sounds even like classical music to me after five listens.

So, why 9 out of 10? Because this feels like a concert without an encore. I demand to have some more.

Thanks for sharing.

An outstanding album, with 17 tracks in an hour, which is full of creativity, and rich in style - from intelligent spoken-words samples and "experimental" tracks, to sheer chill-out ambience. This album will never bore you out; it keeps stimulating your imagination. I deeply regret that I haven't listened this album up until today. I should have done so months earlier.

My favourite tracks: Club (track 3) has a nice dark-ambient atomosphere, and it is very dynamic and ideal for chill-out at the same time. Disciplina (track 5), which begins a distinct middle-eastern feel, is perhaps the most dramatic track on this album. I felt as if I was opening a new page of a brand-new book when the bass kicked in. Seis Segadoras Verdes (track 7) tells you a story even if you don't know "the tale of the same name". It's a bit sad that dB (track 9) is only 2:21 - this is a gem. Next time I get asked what "experimental" electronic music sounds like, I will let them listen to Proceso de ensamblado de la Mujer Azul (track 11).

Thank you for sharing.
