Wow, Josh, you're like a one-man shuffle playlist in a good way. This album has some strong songwriting from enough genres that anyone trying to stick the CD in a single bin at the record store is in danger of becoming schizophrenic. At times I heard some Death Cab, and the last song in particular had strains of Muse. Other songs are gentle and croonish in an Amos Lee sort of way. I would be happy hearing any of these songs again, they each stand on their own. But I'm not sure yet whether the album demands to be listened to as a whole. May take another listen or two before I decide.
Regardless, Josh is established as a Jamendo staple. Kudos.
Production, performance and writing are all great. Reminiscent of Depeche Mode without being derivative. I was expecting an album and was disappointed to find it was only a single track. More, please!
This is the full package, with solid production, vocals, guitar, lyrics and melodies. Haven't heard Josh before this morning when I clicked on the avocado, so now I get to go back and hear all his older stuff too. Sweet.
Great band, great vibe, great singer. As good as the singer is, I question the wisdom of including two instrumentals on a short, 6-track EP.
They remind me a bit of Incubus, one of my favorite mainstream bands. I love track 1 and track 6 (yes, one of the instrumentals, I just complained about...) and I'd love to hear a full 12 track album.
This album is mediocre solo piano compositions, recorded with an abysmal synthesized piano. If it had been a real piano, or interesting compositions, or inspired performances, I might have made it all the way through. But the whole thing is quite medocre.
What a rollercoaster ride! After 30 seconds, I was impressed. After two songs, I was really excited. Be my flower has great breaks and stunning harmonies on the chorus. But Summertime is a misguided cover version of the song, and the fourth track is quite average and forgettable. At that point I was disappointed, feeling that the first two songs were a fluke. Then News From The Sky completely redeemed the album, and I was excited again.
Am I crazy, or are tracks 6 and 7 complete repeats of tracks 1 and 2? What's going on here?
It seems to me that this is 3 great songs, 13 great minutes, with two average songs, and then two repeats.
Still, the three great songs have been added to my Jamendo playlist, and will be played frequently. They represent the best of Jamendo, and of Creative Commons music. So thank you for that gift.
I'm sorry, but it's just awful.
