This is in fact the first metal CD that I listened to in my life. I have always thought that this genre of music is rather scary and nasty so this was a nice surprise. This is melodious and creates a nice mood. That's a pity I don't recognise the language in the lyrics. Is it French or one of the Celtic languages? I wish I could understand the texts. Anyway, why is the band called after the wolf from the Edda and not any of the creatures or characters from Celtic mythologies?
Bon courage ^^
I personally am a fan of crossing metal and celtic concepts within a genre, so naturally I checked this out.
The instrumentation is absolutely fantastic. The only clear issue is mastering - the quality is poor, but I give you credit because you're talented, and this is your first release. I can barely hear the bass, and everything in the mix in general is very unbalanced.
The singer's voice is beautiful, but I can't understand your English... Don't you think you might fare better singing your native tongue? And I must agree with a past reviewer in stating that the female-fronted opera-like singing has been done to hell... but with a little work it would be fantastic regardless.
I do look forward to hearing more - I hope you're able to improve upon your sound as you get more experience.
Mix of celtic music and metal is something that I like very much, so it's not surprise that I likedthis album.
Fenrir's way of playing and singing is very nice. The band seems to have many new ideas about music and I think they enjoy just playing music together. Unfortunately, the quality of recording isn't as good as the quality of singing and playing. This is a main disadvantage of the album.
But all in all, I recommend "Whispers of the old world" and I'm looking forward to listening new Fenrir's albums.
The female vocals on Fianna remind me a little of Sonja Kristina of Curved Air.
I'd agree that the mastering and some elements of the recording could have been better. That happens, though, and usually only gets better as a band/artist continues. The composition and how well the parts are played and the vocal skill are all excellent though. The degree of interplay between the instruments and the way the themes develop would make me guess that this is a group that spends a lot of time writing and rehearsing, and I'd be that when performing live they can be amazing.
I hope we hear more of them.
