The Lunacy Board avoided traditional difficulties with recording their second album by forcing themselves to write, record and mix the whole of 'Difficult Second' within a single day.  The results, whilst perhaps a little rougher around the edges than they would usually produce, reflect and build upon the genre-hopping music and intelligent yet humorous lyrics of their 'Eponymous Debut' album.

The tracks range from short, three-minute long acoustic songs, via rock, pop and genres in-between to a long improvised instrumental track coming in at over 15 minutes long full of textures new and old.  Topics covered by the songs feature Board stalwarts like love and the state of the World, but also focus on 'reality' television, life choices, counterfeit watches and even UK haulier Eddie Stobart.

Collaborators on this album are thereminists Beat Frequency and Wilco Botermans who have done some great work adding unusual sounds and haunting harmonies to the already eclectic mix.

This has a few really good songs, with thoughtful lyrics. The production is far from being clean and sterile - there are some problems with tuning in a few places and others where the rhythm doesn't seem to match up, but the material itself, i.e. the songs, are strong.

I see that the album was written/recorded in a day, which makes the flaws a bit more acceptable, I think.

'Choices' is very like some of the acoustic pieces from Jethro Tull's Aqualung, and 'Exquisite Replica' is sort of rock meets seaside music hall, and the two longer tracks are pretty much freefrom instrumental jams.

A strange selection of music, but quirky fun music with a heart. As a whole it reminds me a bit of Syd Barrett albums - ramshackle and a bit all over the place, but with some wonderful ideas.

Sorry, this music is simply bad. No rhytms. No structures. False vocals, primitive guitars. This is not quality. G-d Bless Ya & Keep on Rockin!
