MMXI

Sie haben sich nach dem Wohnhaus des Malers Goya genannt. Aber eigentlich hat die Musik von La Quinta del Sordo wenig artifizielles. Auf ihrem Debüt MMXI präsentieren die vier Spanier eine Mischung aus Blues, Soul und jazzigen Klängen.

Es gibt Debüts, die sofort einschlagen und für immer als Meisterwerke der Musikgeschichte in Erinnerung bleiben. Man denke nur an "Are You Experienced?" von Jimi Hendrix, die erste Scheibe von den Doors oder die von The Strokes (für die jüngeren Leser). Und dann gibt es Erstlingswerke, die eher einen Wachstumsprozess nachzeichnen als gleich ein vollgültiges musikalisches Statement abzugeben. MMXI zählt zur zweiten Kategorie. Hier zeigt sich eine Band, die ihre musikalische Welt noch absteckt, die andeutet, in welche Richtung man gehen könnte. Das ist bunt wie ein Gemischtwarenladen und so unterhaltsam wie die Zufallswiedergabe bei einer mit der verschiedensten Musik gefüllten Festplatte.

Das Album startet (programmatisch? - eher nicht) mit "Revolucion": Orgel und E-Piano werden von einer sanften Blues-Gitarre begleitet. Und erst der Gesang macht klar, dass hier Spanier am Werken sind. Später wird die selbstproduzierte Scheibe auch klassisch bluesrockig, bringt verträumte a capella-vocals, die von Fusion-Jazz aufgefangen werden. Das ganze auf einem immer hörbaren Niveau und in einem absolut überzeugenden Soundgewand. Eine Zustandsbeschreibung einer Band, die sich hoffentlich ihre Vielseitigkeit bewahrt und nicht irgendwann beschließt, nur einen der angedeuteten Pfade weiter zu verfolgen. Ich werde die Band bei Jamendo auf jeden Fall im Auge behalten.

"Revolución" A great mono toned organ and electric piano start with an oh so smooth slow Blues guitar overlay. That was enough. Then the flowing Spanish male vocals started and with a burst. This built to lead to well executed harmonies. The whole was the sum of several beautiful parts.

"Libre" Heavy, mid-paced percussion and Blues hammered keys, not to mention a whining Blues guitar. A forceful guitar riff tugged at my left ear, before it disappeared under the vocals. The heavy Blues was crafted well with the rhythm guitars singing from either sides of my head and the lead striking from the middle.

"Recuerdos" This was as traditional Blues as you could get. The electric piano was soft with an organ overlay. The soft steady percussion moved up a pace for the chorus but was relaxed otherwise. The guitar was magnificent as it rang out melodies that were wondrous.

"Pensando en ti" A good slow paced Blues feel. with good well delivered vocals. The channel separation was quite steep on the left guitar, which did freak me out a bit. The tempo was fairly consistent throughout which was ok , but not as varied as I was accustomed to.

"Sin ti" This slow Blues feel was just the right mood for a relaxed tone. The slow draw on the guitar, softly played piano and light touch on percussion was ideal. The vocals entered to enhance the feel. A constant punch on the bass enforced the relaxed mood. Guitar and vocals were designed to make you listen, feel and relax.

"Luz" A slow pace with a heavy punching bass created a slow crawl. The guitar riff in my right ear brought a little funk into the theme. The change in pace with chorus was well done, as was the injection of horns to my right ear.

A fabulous work which I could listen to all day. The style of Blues were performed at a standard that don't come much better. A great overall performance, with hats off to the guitarist and vocalist. Although mainly Blues, there was much variety within and between the tracks. A great performance of music that I think could be used for most occasions from listening to dancing.
