The debut Missing Host Band album consists of rough but melodic postrock tunes with some electronica flavour, which is a good thing. I’m a fan of such music, so I quite enjoyed Dusk Gazing. Slow, dirty and reverbed guitar loops connected with not very abundant drums creates very nice, slacking, lazy atmosphere. Even if you’re not keen on post-rock it’s good to listen to it on some afternoon when you do nothing but lay in bed. The best tunes on the record in my humble opinion are: toufic with very ascetic, almost Joy Division sound plus great pitch-ascending melody and easy to popular, very neatly mocking easy listening melodies.
The cover of the record corresponds to the album very neatly and it cues the postrock/ electronic mood. It’s almost estethic, so thumbs up for it.
The only disadvantage is a structural minimalism of the record. It’s not as atmospheric as To Rococo Rot or Tortoise so the album loses a lot not being a little bit more composed. However this is my only remark. I hope that the possible live version would include richer arrangements and longer compositions.

stay tuned,

Vate - Volt

Vate

Volt

From the very beginning of the record one finds that it is the same old good Vate we like so much. Turismo, the first tune of the LP is Tour de France of the modern era, when car rallies replaced bicycle ones. I have already written about the next piece, Orient Stress, and I can only repeat that it's the most energetic one composed by Vate. Highly recommendable mixture of industrial samples with electro mood. Mundo Libre is a little bit similar. Still nice beat and melodic keyboard. Hertz has a great, radiative mood. Info is too similar to the tunes from previous Aeronautica..., but for those who do not know this album it still may be catchy. Watt is a very mechanical tune with one keyboard melody being very much intruding and engaging. Amper is quite the oppposite, very ambiental and etheric. The eponymous tune is quite Autechre-like in its beat and composition, with only one a little bit annoying sample. Yo soy maquina is another obvious Kraftwerk-tribute in name, but more experimental in style. Summarizing, Vate created another extremely interesting concept album, dealing mainly with electicity. Something like Kraftwerk's Radioactivity on the jamendo scale of course. The cover is great so it's ten form me this time. I suppose it's Vate's Opus Magnum, as for now of course.

Fluydo - 7 Fool Moons 6/7

Fluydo

7 Fool Moons 6/7

So there we have it... Another enclosure of the forthcoming album (I hope). This one begins with a little bit trip-hop/psychedelic intro, which makes the listener interested and afterwards the mood starts that has been already acknowledged by us from other Fluydo’s productions. Well… The melodic trip-pop is more carefully produced this time with more reverbs and sound-engineering which makes it even more engaging. I loved the scratches in the chorus, I loved the singing, I love the cover (as always, because it is always the same in alternative colours). I have only one remark: the bassline sounds a little bit plastic for me, which is annoying as the rest of the production is nearly perfect. So it’s nine that time, but it was really close to a full (fool :-) ten!!!

ShakuEcho - Megamix

ShakuEcho

Megamix

I don’t know if I should start with that particular record. I mean… this is a remix of ShakuEcho’s previous musical achievements, and I haven’t heard another ShakuEcho’s albums yet. In that respect, every my review would be slightly inaccurate.
What can I say about the LP? Well… It’s just one tune, a forty some, constant tribal-trance journey. I must say that the beat doesn’t slow down for a minute, so it is great if one wants to party. There are also nice melodic, orient motifs, which make the record pleasant to listen to while working on your PC. Of course, the music is somewhat retro, and there aren’t any DJ’s or composer’s tricks and sounds one hasn’t heard before, but it’s still nice. I’m quite fond of such music, so for me the record is definitely recommendable.
I loved the cover, reminding me of those crazy guys, KLF, and their tribal-spiritual videos. Overall it’s an eight for now, but I hope to give a higher grade to another album from this band, when I have time to listen to them.

Saluto and takecare,

It is nice to see a good record on jamendo that comes from country of my origin, namely Poland. The EP of Projekt Niewidzialne Swinie (The Invisible Pigs Project) came as a surprise for me. I hadn’t heard of a Polish band playing such music for quite a long time. I suppose that since the depth of 90s’ when the underground Polish scene saw such bands as Marchlewski, Serpent Beat or Blimp there hasn’t been a decent darkwave electro industrial record. Projekt’s EP is such a music, however it has all the advantages of this genre, it also has its drawbacks.
First of all, such I’vej ust said, I’ve already listened to it all ten years ago. Although compositions such as “Bas i ambient” possess the energy and mood necessary to move me from my chair, I must admit that I know few underground bands (or even not so underground, Sisters of Mercy or Cure are first to mention here) that possess me more. ;-) There is also a lack of vocals on the record. Maybe it was intentional, maybe not, but except for very quiet and mild female singer in the first tune “Szumy” there is no voice at all, which affects the whole record in a negative way.
I liked the cover, although it’s not professional. I suppose that’s the very problem of the recording. Jamendo and other CC website’s has a quite high level of musicians’ proficiency nowadays, so if the record sound demoish, and this one does, it wont’ get the highest score. This the case with The Invisible Pigs Project. It’s eight for me for a start and I wait for a better, second record from the band because they sound promising after all.

It’s hard to say something about this quite short single. It’s just to short to say anything the whole record, however the composing premiers pas!, A l'heure ou le dragon se lève, is very much promising. It reminds me of some underground-jazz records of more melodic Lester Bowie or Medeski, Martin & Wood pieces or even moments from Henry Cow recordings. The record it’s very neatly composed and it has great, uplifting atmosphere. Arrangement is also very professional form the very beginning of paino melody, till the trumpet, base, piano, drums climax. The only drawback is the length of the tune. Although I understand that in their kind of jazz the mood is more important than showing-off, if it was twice longer and the musicians had time to show their jazz-skills I would simply fall for the band till the very end.
The cover is also a little bit too infantile for me. Like… a drawing of a dragon and birds. Too verbatim, I suppose. C’mon, it can get much better than this! Because of that, it’s a half point down.
If Les Sens Crient played live I would definitely go to see it, because it may be a really interesting jazz-journey.
Taking all under considerations it’s 8 for jamendo, but on my blog, when I can do what I want ;-) it’ll be 8 and a half.

Binärpilot - Defrag

Binärpilot

Defrag

21/01/08

One just has to like 8-bit self-ironic electro to write something good about it. Well… I do like it ;-) The Norwegian composer created a really nice experimental trip through drills, drums and melodies. What I loved, were also the lyrics (which is quite rare in this strictly instrumental kind of music). Let us take Sandjorda for example which begins with verses: I've got something to say gonna say it quick/With a melody behind to make it stick/You'll never hear this song on the radio/Never see me perform on a TV-show. Isn’t that very much true?
To summarize. There are 4-tracks on Defrag, 15 minutes of muziq as such. If one adores melodic chip-tunes it’s his record. If not, he’ll survive anyway - it’s just a quarter of time, so I would recommend it to everyone around.
About the cover. It’s fitting very nicely into a genre Binärpilot plays. So it’s one thumb up again.
It would be ten then, but still, there are some imperfections. Widibf is a little bit too monotonous, and this record lowers an overall note. Because of that it’s nine this time, but I keep my eye on the artist.

saluto,

Vate - Orient Stress

Vate

Orient Stress

14/01/08

I haven’t been reviewing Vate’s productions for quite a long time, and after I had launched Orient Stress I thought it’s some other guy’s single. The eponymous piece it’s not as Kraftwerk as I’m get used to concerning Vate. It’s much more lively, resembling more Retrigger’s break-beat (speaking of jamendo) than electro-ambient suites Vate had composed before. The other tune UPNK (in two versions – Vicious and Rotten) it’s almost industrial. It sounds as you would take a beat and bass from some Front 242 or sisters of Mercy remix and put a little bit of electro flavour in it. What can I say about such a change in style? I love it!!! Orient Stress proved to me that Vate is a mature producer and I can expect surprises from him - very nice surprises!

About the cover. It suits the record perfectly, besides it’s very esthetic.
It’s ten boys and girls!!! One of the most interesting things the last year brought on jamendo. Believe me – it’s a thing worth checking.

This ep is extremely nice and I must say that I quite enjoyed it. The band swiftly revolves around Pink Floyd, pop-rock and psychedelique modes. About the songs… Most of them sound like a very nice space-out travel between melodic Brit-pop and Pink Floyd-like atmosphere. There is a piano sound and catchy choruses, so that’s one point up for the band. Sometimes, keyboard is a little bit too midi, but the guitars and the way songs are composed covers that.
A propos… The cover of the record reminds me of some gothic or dark experimental band, but it’s lovely, so it doesn’t curtail my grade.
It’s nine for now, and I just hope that another precious ep will be ten.

stay cool and saluto,

Epoxia - Epoxia

After I had listened Epoxia for the first time, I thought that I’m listening to some Kraftwerk-like, Vate-similar production. Well, I couldn’t be more wrong. It’s true that they Epoxia is one of Vate’s bands and both composers, Vate and Luar, have some inclinations towards Kraut-electro, but the resemblances end here. Epoxia creates a style completely different from Vate’s one, although it’s still cool, rhythmical electronica, it’s different and, what’s more important, very much creative.
My favourite tune are both versions of Soberbia Spiritual. It really rocks (although guitar samples are very subtle here), and it really flows, the way I like it. It doesn’t mean that another tunes are useless. Hombre Soberbia is really rhytmical, and El Hombre Nuevo is extremely melodic.
The cover is also two thumbs up, however it would be better without the picture of the author in it.
Ok. To summarizes it. Very cool and neatly done electro. Definitely worth recommending.

Stay cool and prosper,

galaktycznyzwiad.
