The album “schattenspiel“ is harder and more confrontational than my previous album “the unsaid.“ The pieces tend to be more forceful and dramatic with heavy chords and buildups. This is especially true with tatendrang which is piano-only. The German word translates roughly as “drive” or “dynamism.” The second piece berserker continues this trend, but with added atmosphere and instruments (trombone). The third and title song schattenspiel is a bit more melodic. The translation is actually shadow theater, but I also wanted a little word play with shadow games; I wanted to convey this with the cover art as well. Finally, schwebend (translation is “floating”) calms things down a little and is more in the style of pieces from “the unsaid.”
Cover art was photographed by myself in Paris August 2007.
