Alvarsovy always seems to manage with explicit ease to replicate a very strong sense of cold industrialism in sound, and yet approach an array of subjects, all fairly traumatic to whatever different degrees, on a sometimes very personal level. Fragile boy is quite typical of an pathway into a view of a tortured soul it seems at times. Fallen boy, and I've done my fair share of falling. The trick really is in getting back up, and so far, so good. A nicely mechanized clockwork piece of musical fruit, to pick and savour the slight variations in taste as the track is consumed by your aural faculties. Quite strongly presented with a sense of something archetypically tribal, almost as if it were a part of some ancient rite.
Fallen boy, like the angel, has a lot of making up to do in the real world, methinks. It's par for the course. Musically, the industrialism heats up again to cold in spirit and that perhaps is what appears to be missing, the gnosis. At the moment I am just falling into the sounds and they are a relatively soft, compared to my state, landing. There is a difference between receiving and taking, albeit so subtle perhaps, but a difference. So, I think, it is with music. Which means there is an element of the performance being held back, and maybe for a very good reason. A reserved display is just one assuming a posture.
Destroyed boy sounds quite drastic on the surface of things. It hangs onto the sense of 'boy' I think, and manages to reveal the aspects and perspectives in a fairly unique fashion. The cold, almost impartial, energy that is emitted and constructed so, are very strong in Cracked boy. It is quite unsettling, though still manages to entertain and cause intrigue. The following track, Bloody boy, invokes a sense of horror in my mind. Quite minimalist but still, as is often the case, very effective. The reserve has now left the room, by the by. Then, the listener moves on to Wasted boy. Some childhoods are unfortunate wastelands, though often make up for it by producing colourful adults, assuming they make it that far. Reflective.
As I listen to Trusting boy, I am reflecting on my reception of this album (it has been fraught with difficulties and disturbances, and diverting upon my attention). There is the consistency, obvious in some sense with the use of 'boy', through each experience of existence possible and relayed in a curious musical sense here. In some ways, all of these tracks could have been consolidated, but have been divided, although not so different in places, and therefore the overall effect, which could be quite traumatic I think, has been somewhat dissipated and for that, and a brave foray into a real darkness of this world, I say 'well done'. Maybe not an album to be enjoyed as much as experienced. So, thank you for this array of tracks and that transportation of eventualities and sharing the load.
