These are original compositions.
I first began writing my own songs at about ten. Those days are too far back to remember, and a few songs were lost. However, my oldest known song is the first on this album. It's a classical-type, straightforward piece. All of the other songs on this album are much more complex and free-formed.
When I play one of my songs, it is never the same; there is always room for me to express how I feel at that moment, and the song is simply the vehicle. There is a basic structure of chords and melodies in most, but not all--for example, "Love Can be Long" is purely improvised in the key of D-flat Major. This key is a favorite key of mine, and whenever I play in it, something good comes out.
Most of these are songs I have played many times; thus I know the structure well. Within this structure, I always embellish--my songs grow every time I play them--new things happen, unexpected music is instantly born. This is similar to how I live my life.
The power of music is to move you: to lift your heart, to cast it down; to make you feel joy and sorrow; to show you beauty and ugliness. Music should be experienced, not just heard.
